The richest person who ever played chess would have to be Bill Gates.
If you mean richest professional chess player, that would probably be Karpov - besides having a successful career as an elite level player for over two decades, he also became a businessman and invested in several Russian energy and infrastructure companies, in addition to having political connections.

Top Hollywood actors earn more. Top musicians earn more. Top athletes earn more. Etc.
If money is your life goal, stay away from chess. It completely depends upon sources like prize money.

The question is who is the richest chess player. Ability has nothing to do with the question. Nobody is asking how good they are, only how rich they are. Maybe another topic could be named "Who is the richest titled chess player?"
Because this one just implies any chess player, regardless of ability.
The story is very sad for Bobby. He wanted one last swan song, and he was warned by the US government not to go there because it was a banned country for traveling at that time. So he never got the money, and could not re-enter the United Staes. That’s why he stayed abroad in countries that would not extradite him. He died abroad, maybe in Japan?
