Who killed chess?

Chess is my life and its a really old game, I believe it has over 1500 years old, and even in ancient cultures we can find games similar to chess like "Ludus latrunculorum" in Rome, Chess was really popular no so many years ago, to be more accurate with the arrival of Bobby Fischer. Those days chess was similar to the NBA or soccer or any sport, those were the golden days of chess, in those we could see a lot of legends like Fischer, Tal, Karpov, etc...

Chess is still a game played by millions but is not what it used to be, the question is why?

For me is the arrival of the machine, everyone remember that match between deep blue and Kasparov, a game that was deciding the future of chess, the best human player vs the machine, and all humans felt bad when Kasparov lose against that machine, I am NOT criticizing Kasparov for what happen there, the result was normal, and nothing can stop progress, a human cant beat a powerful engine, not even a world champion can, asking that would be like asking Usain Bolt to be faster than a Ferrari, at the beginning humans could laugh at machines for their level but the programmers were always thinking laugh now and suffer latter, technology advances every day, every minute, so it was obvious the result in that match.

After the result on that match something went lose, seen a legend like Kasparov (maybe the best player in all the history of chess) falling against the machine made chess lose something, and every time it happens its a great hit, Alpha go destroying the best Go players, and recently the fall of Stockfish against Alphazero, when I read that I thought maybe Stockfish wasn't so great, but he is, well he has over 3400+ of strength, but again something went missing.

The fall of the legends combined with the lack of sponsors at chess is killing this beautiful game, but again this is my personal opinion, what do you think?, do you agree with me?

For me, the rise and growing strength of chess computers is just an intellectual curiosity. I'm actually returning to chess after more than 35 years. I've never played through a game played by a computer. I only play through human-played games. To me, chess continues to be a fascinating and rewarding way to spend an evening.

Chess is everything to me, I used to be without discipline and interest for anything, but when I met chess I change, now I can study 5 hours a day and play withouth any break, nothing has been like chess to me, I have this little history of myself, I woke up in the morning like 10 am and said I am going to play 2 games and then I cook my breakfast, I take my breakfast at 6 pm, I wasnt able to stop and then I study and is just amazing, I decided to dedicate my life to chess because is what I love most, I cant imagine doing something else, I went to the university and have played the piano since I was 6 but nothing was like chess, nothing in my school, nothing in my university, a mith is you cant live from chess, but you can, also when I take this choice I said even if I am hungry at least I am going to be happy playing chess.

I've never replayed a game played by a computer either. But I haven't replayed a game played by a human either. Until I read your comments, I have never thought about it. But it seems like it would be far more interesting to see how a human moves rather than a computer. Which is why chess will probably never go away. I'll bet a car race between people is probably a lot more interesting than a car race between self driving cars.

Wow.  You have incredible passion for chess!

I too hope chess is not dead.  AlphaZero might have killed the game.
