Who will win the 2013 world championship? Anand or Carlsen?

Oh, okay. But ICC is worse because you have to pay right when you sign up, while on chess.com you get it free then are offered to pay to upgrade and get the much cooler things which will probably tempt you to. I have not signed up for ICC.

To those of you who are criticizing Anand, (don't know who I want to win, I'm kind of on both sides) ever thought of the fact that Anand could be reading this right now? I mean, he could be a chess.com member (I'm not sure).

He is a chess.com member, but he knows he needs luck (lots of it).

It's not like he's going to give any of us a chase or anything. Anyway the forums are the backstreet bars of chess sites, so he's hardly going to wander in sober.

no it never crossed my mind because its complete bull, he is the number 1 has lots of cash, has homes in spain and india and can tour the entire world.

he can live in a five class hotel in new york today and a 5 class hotel in shanghai tomorrow and lay down on the beach of rio 5 days from then

why would Anand have nothing better to do than wasting his precious winner time with reading chats of people far below him???

i think its very very very unlikely that any great chess player who has piles of cash, at least in my personal opinion will read posts on chess.com or any other chess site.

Well, technically, Carlsen is the number 1 (it's the rating, not the World Champion).

It's probably not important since we're considering their present day strength, but Anand overall (factoring in both Classical and Rapid\exhibition games) has beaten Carlsen 15 to 11 with 36 draws according to Chessgames.com. In classical games only, Anand has beaten Carlsen 6 to 3 with 20 draws.

It's wise to remember that Anand is immensely talented and that he's one of (certainly even more now) Carlsen's toughest opponents. Although, we are looking at present strength and Carlsen's win against Anand at the recent Tal Memorial sets a tense tone. Certainly, it's a reminder and indicator that Carlsen can overrun Anand in 29 moves if he plays well enough. Considering recent play while factoring their overall record of games played against each other indicates that Anand has marginally outplayed Carlsen in the long term but Carlsen grows stronger with time. Maybe Carlsen's likely to outplay Anand now than when he was younger, but I think it will still be a struggle for both players.

It will be a struggle of two worthy opponents with different ideas...should be very interesting.

i think anand will take a deep look at sidelines in popular openings.that s predictable carlsen will go for them.

Especially if Carlsen is kidnapped.

Carlsen for sure.....there is nothing positive about the results Anand has been getting lately...... Carlsen is as usual looks hungry for more whereas Anand looks out of sorts. Perhaps he has grown old now and it is time that a new King takes over the throne.

Does anybody have any info about who's going to be on Anand's & Carlsen's support teams (seconds, etc.)? There's very little reporting about this in the news media. I'm curious because Anand needs to replace two important members from his earlier WC matches (PH Nielsen & Kasimzhadov).

Also, where can I get info about Carlsen's performances in a match format? He has had a phenomenal run in the tournament format over the past 2-3 years but, match play is a slightly different animal. The last candidates qualifier was in tournament format & Carlsen skipped the qualifier for the 2012 WC (which if my memory serves me right, was in match format). I wonder if Carlsen has participated in any match play in the last 2-3 years (earlier than the last 2-3 years will be meaningless).

I think Tal might throw a surprise.  Never underestimate Tal.

Avatar of DelayedResponse

Here_Is_Plenty, Mikhail Tal is dead. Why else would they call it the Tal MEMORIAL? Noleryer, are you the one who keeps saying Nakamura? Nakamura is not even in the World Championship. There are only 2 players: Anand, and Carlsen.

I think both have a reason why they might win. Carlsen is younger and more healthy, while Anand is more experienced.

Avatar of Here_Is_Plenty

Exactly angrybird - all the more reason not to underestimate him!  When Tal is least expected to rise....  Seriously, dude, ironic or sardonic humour is available in lesson form.  Consider this your first free one.  In case you are in any doubt, read the story I posted on this site "To answer the question" which indeed cites the fact that Tal passed away.

On a side point, Fischer might also be a contender...

Hah hah very funny Here_Is_Plenty. And that is a very weird username by the way. You seriously think that he could "rise from the dead"? Not to be insulting or anything, but if you think that I think you need a pyschiatrist.

Avatar of Here_Is_Plenty

Interesting.  The point of the story was science fiction.  The point of the posting is humour.  My username is an anagram of my real name.  Any more questions?  Psychiatrist?  Humour therapist maybe for one of us.

Avatar of DelayedResponse

Yes, a humour therapist for you might work. Maybe even a joke counselour! Laughing
