My chess club at uni was epic!
Why are Chess Clubs so arrogant?

Being a bit arrogant toward other chess players is a side-effect of playing chess. Playing, winning and imporving requires a certain amount of confidence that can often times come across as arrogant.
Here is an article I was just reading today that addresses your problem:
loved the article thanks!

When I am playing in my club there is no day without having lots of fun playing stuff like blitz or bullet. For me chess isnt just a game I am playing for myself, its really something to have fun with other people, to compare and speak about chess. Without this chess wouldnt make sense to me. Even for Magnus it would be pointless to be the best if there is no one to play with and no Community which is interested on him.
So it seems you really had just bad luck to get such a club like this. I hope you will visit other clubs and I am very sure you will find a good one. Cheers, Till_98

completely agree! This chess club seems to be social as well as competative so it's best of both worlds!

All the chess clubs/tournaments/gatherings I have attended have all been like that. I have gone to many, and I often find people who are friendly and open, but for the most part, many of the players are socially awkward, arrogant and weird as f****
Keep attending though. You might find some of those silent creeps to be friendly after a while, once they get used to you. You will eventually meet plenty of players who are more like you.
Found a lovely club the other day, people are really friendly and they dont segregate the good players (them) from the weaker ones (er, that's just me....) cant wait to see the guys at Worsley Chess Club again next week!
