The guy does not want to teack kids that have no money to pay his fee. If your age is correct on here, why would you not give it? I would like to know who you are if i had to teach you. Your age is an important piece of information to him..
why are grandmaster picky who they teach

returnofxpchesser A grandmaster would not want to teach anyone whose thinking process is that if someone asks an age that he must be a pedophile who teaches only children. Chess is not a good game for you.

Lol what do you mean??????

Still a grandmaster should teach for all ages not just children. Someone as an adult would be as productive if he was teaching a child. It does not make sense.

returnofxpchesser There are very good reasons why grandmasters might not teach children. One reason is there are many players who have the skills to teach children. Thus a grandmaster can use his higher skills to teach higher skilled players and this usually means not children.
If you assume that if a grandmaster asks for a age that he is looking to teach children and that he must be a pedophile shows a lack of being able to look at reasonable alternatives and if you cannot "see" reasonable alternatives this does not bode well for teaching you chess where there are many "reasonable alternatives"

Remind me how this guy has an 1800 rating but can't think of a reason a grandmaster would want to know the age of a prospective pupil?

I understand that but what grandmaster would say to an expecting client ill teach chess based on a certain age for special approval. Even grandmaster gregory kaidonov is wiling to give services to anyone without prejudice
http://www.kaidanov.org/ or the grandmasters at the st louis chess club teaches for all ages even their lectures are on point even though its not one on one.

The minds of children and adult are completely different and learn in different ways, so it is important for a teacher to know the age of their students.

The coaches that I know have a limited amount of time and cannot accept every student who inquires about instruction. Thus, they are "picky" when they select students. Their objective is to select students who will benefit the most from their instruction. Hence, the need for information about prospective students.
A GM probably has less time (and is more in demand) than the coaches that I know, making them even more "picky."

Maybe he doesn't really know how to teach adults? Adults and children learn differently. If his area of expertise is children, then that's what he's good with. He also has a right to be picky about his students and they should teach who they want. It personally doesn't make sense to me either since money is money, but maybe I'll understand someday if I ever become titled and offer coaching services.

If they accept too many students, the quality of their teaching goes down, their reputation is diminished, and the amount that they can charge decreases. The more exclusive they are, the more they can charge.
Just recently i recieved and an email from a grandmaster asking my age. Here is his response
"Thank you for more information about you. I do not your age, I cannot coach you, and cannot give you other
suggestion at the moment, other then following my webpage, and learning
from it (directly or through the links). If you tell me your age, it is
possible."
This grandmaster must be some type of pedophile if he teaches to only children.
