Of course it's not random, almost certainly gender related. Many choose to avoid the facts in their need to observe some warped sense of politcal correctness.

Obviously, the separation of men's and women's titles and events in chess is absurd. Just as insulting as "Affirmative Action" in the U.S. There are some well meaning ideas and people behind this absurdity. But, no doubt, it remains absurd, with no end in sight.

And I have no clue why only Judith Polgar has broken into the top ten.

I agree that they're not necessary anymore. I don't know why so many women insist on playing in women only tournaments. I think it's stupid. One reason about the Judith thing could be that there are less women playing. I think a lot of men enjoy the feeling that they're in an elite, men only group. "We're in a club that women aren't good enough for." kind of egoism.

you girls should start a band.

Avatar of gordonyoung

its in the genes.Same reason that women are better at knitting .

Avatar of Teja

You mean they have better manual dexterity than men ..We can go into a host of reasons why men at better at some things than women and vice-versa, but the sum of the parts does not prove the whole to mean: men are better than women Smile

I've always thought it amusing how men wish to REALLY BE WITH other men and were embarrassed about it, thus the genesis and loyalty to contact sportsLaughing

But they say it's to "get out their frustrations"! HilariousLaughing

hmm...  probably several things.  statistically, women are less extreme than men - fewer genius IQs, fewer idiots as well.  chessplayers also need to be rather obsessive - i've always seen that as being more of a male trait.  i wonder how well women do in other games?  are there a host of female draughts players, poker players, go players?  or do women tend not to bother with games so much?

finally - men tend to get their performances taken more seriously.  take cooking - an activity that is classically 'female' - how many top chefs are women?  is it because women are less talented?  less capable in the kitchen?  or is it to do with the structure of the job, the support that they are offered etc etc?

It's actually a trick non-issue that you're speaking about seriously. Simply put, individuals choose to devote the time necessary to excel at a given endeavor. Some endeavors, for example, may require dexterity. Others may require strength. And still others may require pattern recognition. The individual that chooses the endeavor to involve themselves in, may not excel beyond all other individuals for reasons peculiar to themselves. Therefore, statistical equality may be lacking, especially if the statistics are born out of a difference in genitalia, skin color, size, etc.
