why are there no low level tournaments to play at

just played my first tournament here and it was against 1500 and plus players  why are there i have been watching-- no tournaments for say under 500 or even under 250 type players to evenly with in reason play against each other

GooseChess

Very few people on the site play tournaments, of the ones that do most are >1000, and of those who aren't they probably will be after a few weeks of playing tournaments.

Tournaments are very much about playing people way out of your rating range than matchmaking is. If your low rated, that means playing a lot of people insanely better than you, but I've gotten a lot of my improvement from playing above my range, just ignore the outcomes and study the games. Good luck!

thanks for the pep talk -- still would think people below 500 at least would like to play in a tournament setting -- but i have been wrong many many time before here

None of this really addresses the issue. There should be tournaments for all rating levels. I'm a Diamond Member and should be able to play in a tournament the same way Titled players are, who get a free premium membership. But there's no reason for me to enter a tournament just to get crushed by 2000s. OP has a valid point.

Perhaps Chess.com could show pop ups for low rated players encouraging them to join tournaments they way they do puzzles and studies. Maybe there's other less annoying ideas to increase the low rated player pool for tournaments. I'm not optimistic though as <500 players either rarely play or won't stay at <500 for very long, especially the ones playing tournaments.

That might be true for a lot of players, but for me playing 2000s is really fun and has helped me improve my game.

I mean you get crushed but you can learn something from it

Try to win Everytime even if you lose also

Lichess has low level arenas if you don't want to get bullied by 2000s

If you worked hard on improving for a few months I’m sure you would be able to perform way better than now

well only one person addressed the problem -- tournaments for lower caste players --- playing for me that is only speaking i guess - is a waste of time against 1000 and up players - i can't even handle twice my rating 250 and up etc -- what would i learn losing has i have many times in the first ten moves from a 1000 plus player --that at least at a 200 and up player i last about 30 moves i get to see that part for the game for change

Sound openings and early game tactics.

well to the gentlemen that seems to think he has a better right to play here than myself at tournaments -- i thought this site was setup for all to learn and play the game at their appropriate levels my being the basement i know your being a lot higher -- but you get to play a part of this site that a low lifer like me can't really enjoy playing ina tournament where you have a chance to at least think they can win a game shame on you for having such narrow view of the majority of players here

to goosechess i think you missed my point -- learning from getting crushed i don't get it i get beaten by lower level players all the time -- but to get really beaten by a 1000 and up players seems and what lesson iam supposed to get they never talk these people to help me understand what i did wrong or mostly what they did right - so i learn what ????? the same moves played by my last tourney 13 losses in a row 13 times how iam going to lose

The only way to actually beat better players

Is to beat them that also means playing against them so losing helps as long as you don't get checkmated when 6 moves

Also I actually do know how to improve I know exactly what you mean

Learn from your mistakes as long as you do that you should improve (your not that's part of the issue )

You play against better players you learn faster

You play against worse players you learn not as fast

Unless you wanna do name calling go right ahead 🤣

If you want to know what you gain it is something called experience it doesn't always help you improve but very handy and most people will improve because of it

Goofy ahhh

thats acually a good question, because every tournament is random elo players, and if you lose to someone higher than you , you don't lose much elo, but the problem is when you start losing constantly is when you lose alot of elo.

But he's 100 elo losing elo doesn't matter lol

tournaments players (even the younger ones) are mostly over 1200 rated, so getting people even lower skilled than that will be hard in real life tournaments. also consider that players who compete OTB are more likely to study openings, do tactics and endgame puzzles, practice a lot, read chess books and watch chess videos, and be serious about improving at the game, which is why they have a higher level.
