Why are there so little female chess players?

The main difference is time and money. Most cultures have the females taking care of the family while the males go out and work. When Susan Polgar was invited to the World Championship, she wasn't allowed to play because it was a man's only club. Recently an Iranian player and Malaysian player were banned from playing professional chess because of the way they dressed.

In the chess world there are an immense number of clever, poor, average and below average looking, men and young men. That is not attractive to females. They tend to gravitate to places where men are like movie stars: money, luxury, glamour and stupidity.

No only do you have a rather sad view on chess players in general, but in addition a strange perception of why women and girls involve themselves in chess.

Hilarious!! Have you ever actually met a woman?

Societal realities do indeed play a part.

Wow.  I can't tell if this is meant to be a joke, or if you seriously believe that women are not as clever as men.  If serious, I'd be interested to know what causes you to come to that conclusion.

I am far from being a politically correct virtue signaler, but the male prejudice, hostility, condescension and sexual innuendo which women have historically been faced with in chess (and other fields) is well known.  Most of it based on societal prejudices ("boys do this, girls do that").   The pool of female chess players is much smaller than men, some of it due to the way in which women are treated, and some of it due to the fact that fewer women may be drawn to chess.  But none of it has anything to do with women being any less clever, less intelligent, or less capable of logical thinking than men.

Interesting topic. Are there mixed gender chess championships ?  and if not, could it be because men are afraid that women would beat them ?

This is not a "sad" view. Chess is, and used to be even more, the less expensive game in the world. Chess used to be the hobby of clever and poor men.

The gap male/female skills in tennis is higher than in chess. But tennis is full of women: players and public, so why? Because a tennis court is MUCH more expensive than a chess board. Tennis is not and never was the hobby of poor men.

Hence the sobriquet, "Game of Kings."

This is so true, its not because women are less intelligent. There are a number of reasons why fewer women play chess.

Historically, chess has been a hugely male-dominated game. And in order to get really good--up to the GM level--a player must start at the local club level and play hundreds, even thousands of games to move up through the tournament ranks. Imagine a young woman walking into a local club and finding herself immersed in a world where she's clearly an outsider and where a small premium is placed on social skills. Unless she has incredibly supportive parents, a burning desire to play, and a talent for the game, she's not likely to make too many appearances there.

But in the age of the internet, I believe all that is changing rapidly. Young women with a flair for the game don't have to sit in a dank church basement with a bunch of crusty old curmudgeons. They can get online and indulge their passion for the game to their heart's content. Just look at this site and all the streamers and commentators who are women. Especially now that COVID has shut down OTB play for the foreseeable future, I believe talented women will more and more appear. And to that I say, "Hurray."

As a female player who has taught chess at schools for years, the under-representation of females in the chess world is more to do with the social aspect and nothing to do with innate ability. In general many young boys love the competitive cut and thrust of chess in the primary school, young girls don’t feel so much at home in this rough-and-tumble world! This debate is complex and this is just a preliminary observation!

shhhh..... you'll shatter someone's fragile and delusional self-esteem.

Too late!! Probably had none to start with hence this topic. ( again.........)

The fact that you have seen this topic discussed previously does not mean everyone else has.  Just an observation.

I could answer this question truthfully and honestly, but I value my testicles. I will say that I grew up in the USA, and no American girl ever beat me at chess. Then I traveled to Asia, where a lot more girls play chess, and are better at it. They blew me away regularly.

I'm at a loss of words. The intention of this is so wrong.

I need to straighten out a few things out.

1. Chess was the hobby of poor men. However women are just as intelligent and capable of playing it.

2. The sole reason of women existing isn't to please or be obsessed with men. Why does it matter who "most" women are attracted to?  What does that even have to do with the game of Chess.

3. The unfortunate reality of many cultures is that women were expected to do household chores such as cooking and cleaning, while men were the breadwinners of the family. In school girls had to take cooking and sewing classes while boys played sports and games. Many women never had the opportunity to learn the game.

There are a plethora of reasons why there are less professional women chess players. Educate yourself.

If that's true, that ranks you at female of females CM, lol: 1600 - 1900 - 2200

And therefore, significantly less clever than significantly less clever than a male... Ouch, must hurt some bit!

I don't know, but little female chess players are probably more interested in chess than big female ones. But, how did you know that there are little female chess players and not the big ones?

Anonymous_Dragon

Regardless of what your opinion about it is , you must agree upon the fact that there is a seperate pool exclusive to females and that they get awarded titles at a much lower rating is unfair.
