Why aren't bishops called gurus, rabbis or mullahs?

Gee, didn't spot that he was complaining!

Anyways, should bishops be called mullahs or muddahs ?

I think "muddah" sounds more current.

I have never came across a thread as stupid as this one lol. Why the hell do you care? It is the name of a piece in a board game, how can this impact your life so much that you feel the need to waste time complaining about it? Really you should find a hobby. Here is an idea!!! Why dont you play chess instead of complaining about it!!!

Uh, yeah... right. I never play chess. That must be it.

But seriously (can we be serious here for a moment?) - it impacts my life.  It keeps me up at night, just wondering who screwed history with the pathetic names they chose for the pieces. I've written protest songs, spoken before Congress. No one does crap to fix this. What do I have to do to get global attention on this urgent issue, run naked through Central Park wearing a Nixon mask?

Probably because it doesn't need to be fixed.

They're called Bishops because that's what someone named them somewhere in the past in this language.

You're free to invent your own game and call the pieces whatever you like - gurus, rabbis or mullahs if you want to.

And if that game you have designed is a good one, then others (including me) will like it and play it a lot. And we will call the pieces what you named them *shrug*

Just don't come to an established game and ask everyone to change the name of a piece only because of your own personal opinion. It's not your game and you get no say in what the pieces are named.

So let me be sure I understand you correctly... You think you're trolling me, by telling me I don't get to change the names of all the chess pieces?  You do realize I'm crying right now, right? I'm very upset about this, because you're ruining the Big Launch™ of my crusade. I had cake, a keg,  pizza, friends coming over for a big dance party to celebrate the Big Renaming on chess.com and now you've spoiled it. I hate you.  You're just a big meanie.

Nice strawman argument you built there, based on an assumption of my thoughts no less.

 More international and religious-neutral:
pawns -- students
knights-- assistant professor
bishops-- adjuncts
rooks --- professors
queens-- deans
kings--football coach

I think a lot of players would find their chess ratings going down. I mean, who doesn't want to be forked by the assistant professor?

The above post is a textbook example of 'progressive' idealism. If it appeals to you and you live in the USA, you're a democrat. If you do not agree with the above post, you are NOT a democrat, so don't vote for them.

Oh, please. So you think that is "Liberal/progressive chess", implying you'd be into Conservative chess? What would that even mean? Bishops are sadists of the Inquisition, the corner squares are detention centers, the castles are Beverly Hills estates. The queen wears a chastity belt, which only knights have a working key to, the pawns are armed to the teeth with guns?  Instead of ELO, your presumed chess prowess is reflected in your stock portfolio?

I really never thought about the religious implications of chess. Pawns are subserviant workers that pave the way for the rest of the chess society. Knights are warriors that protect and attack opposing forces to protect the king & queen and give support to advancing pawns. Bishops are guiding forces that keep the playing field equal by enforcing barriers that cannot be broken. Rooks are bastions meant to keep the hordes at bay and to provide safety for the remaining armies after battle.  The queen is powerful by inheritance and can elimante any and all enemies. The king is ruler of all and must be protected by all means possible.

Ah, but this has taken a whole new twist. Comers of late have decided there's now a political partisan and socio-economic aspect to chess.  We're now facing the possibility that there will be chess for Conservatives and a different chess for Liberals.

And "checkmate" sounds sexist but not sure against who. Possibly the Czech's.

I think some people are taking this more seriously than it's meant. You should stick this at the top of the first comment:

Chess.com probably needs to simply increase the scope of their themes. Not just colors and piece styles, but piece names and possibly shapes (which would be much easier to pull off graphically than in actual material pieces).

Then they can add audio capabilities to the game analysis where a text/audio engine interprets the analysis file and converts the output to the selected theme, and speaks it in the selected theme as well.

  • Partisan Politics Theme
  • Barnyard Animals Theme
  • African Plains Animals Theme
  • Polar Cap Animals Theme
