Why can’t I improve?

It just feels like I’ve completely stagnated and can’t improve anymore. I’m trying to learn but it’s like always use the wrong idea in the position, or I don’t spot the advantage. How should I try to stop stagnating and start improving again?

I would reccomend to read a book on chess psychology that covers a lot of fields such as decisiom making etc so you can see what you need to keep in mind while you play

Playing new computer bots also help seeing new connections you hadn't seen before.
The Play Magnus app for example is pretty amazing.

You have a great point here @Batman2508, psychology counts a lot in performance, believing in yourself, not letting a loss affect you too much...etc Do you have YouTube recommendations by any chance? Also, in your experiences did you also go through big drop in your Leo rating and then came back or was it always pretty smooth until blocked?

My rating’s very volatile otb, but I’m talking about online rn, as I want to get better at chess in general before really focusing on otb.

for me I usually don't let a loss affect me too much. Here where I live, we have a lot of free local 1 day tournaments where sometimes after you finish a round next round starts in 5 minutes, so no time to really recover. For youtube I watch chess dogo sometimes. Online was very crazy elo for me but in otb, it's much more stable in otb usually I will play tournaments for a couple of months where my elo doesn't move much maybe 30 points, and after that suddenly next few events I gain a lot and get like 150 points.

uhh gl with that because many people's online ratings don't even move but otb ratings go higher.

but you need to get better at chess before getting better at otb, isn’t that how chess works?

Well, is your goal to get a high otb rating or is it to get a high online rating? Because while both require chess improvement, the methods to do so are different.

May I ask how did you reach 2200, what did you do to get there? I wish I stagnated at 2200, I am rated 1900 rapid, 1800 blitz

Sorry guys, catching up, what is different with the online and OTB rating? I didn't know methods would differ to progress. If that can help everyone else, any tips welcome.

@TheSwissPhoenix, I see that you want to improve online rating before going into OTB more seriously, if I understood. But shouldn't you focus on OTB then? A chess club sounds like a good start, if online and OTB are different as everyone seem to say here then maybe it's not as important to see your online rating go up to improve your orb? Hope I make sense.haha

don’t you have to get better at chess to improve at both of them tho? My final goal is to improve otb I thought improving online was a step along the way

I dont think so

Just don't play online is my opinion

Duck

To be honest I just become better by playing more games, by getting myself immersed in a certain position, or simply by analyzing my games.
