Yeah but the Cuban missile crisis was over maintaining a strategic Soviet nuclear outpost in the Western Hemisphere. That's a little more geopolitically important in the grand scheme of things than whether Bobby Fischer chooses to defend his title in the World chess championship.

I actually see it like this. Bobby Fischer -- The King of Chess -- refuses to participate in the WCC in 1975. Elvis -- The King of Rock'n'Roll -- DIES just two years later, in 1977. You see a connection? That cannot be mere coincidence.

Interesting theory with the connection to Elvis.
Conspiracy theories do tend to be a bit " out there " as they are often brought forward by people who may be a bit unstable.
Okay, here's one: there are a lot of unstable people out there...and then a bunch of theories about men never landing on the moon & stuff like that come up!

Fischer was going to lose his match vs. Karpov. He stood no chance against Karpov. He didn't defend it to avoid embarassment.

Fischer was NOT afraid of anyone! for over 50 years the Reigning champion dictated the coditions of the World Title match ( by the way, they were ALL russians) as soon as Fischer wan, Fide under pressure from the Komis; proceeded to strip Fischer of these rigths the Champions had enjoyed for over 1/2 century; hence, the problem; In addition, I believe the State Department to "sweeten" the deal, threw in a blank check for him to fill out the amount so He would NOT give the Russians the opportunity to take back the crown. This is why they went after him with a venguance when he played Spasky in the 80's and forced him into exile!

I will admit that Bobby was one of the best players ever, but THE best, no. Karpov at the time was better than Fischer by a good 100 rating points, but Fischers attacking style would have been destroyed by Karpov's prophylactic play.

bobby fischer goes to war is an excellent book that details fischer and spassky, their lives and psychology, many references, about the time of the match. there are some good documentaries about them, and many people who knew them viscerally. from what i had gathered, it seemed to me that fischer did not feel that a champion should make mistakes. although high-functioning, it seemed already by the late 60's that he had some issues with paranoia, although he could be quite gracious and charming on some occasions, too, then and after.

fischer being scared of somebody is a stupid assumption.
Look at it this way, fischer was self obsessed with the hugest ego in the world. he said he could beat god with the white pieces, and its my feeling he fully believed he could.
The guy was insane, it wasnt out of fear. I think the insanity got the better of him and he couldnt deal with other people/tournaments anymore.
