Yea but Reb, reading your program paranoia posts in the past (holy alliteration) you do strike me as someone who would accuse anyone that beats you and is not a master of using a program...

I have lost almost 100 games here and many too lower rated players, I dont recall accusing any of cheating. I havent lost a game in otb play to someone 600 points lower rated in more than a decade so I am naturally suspicious why it seems to happen on the net so much but not otb......

Reb things are different online for lots of reasons as u know. You as a master are generally better at calculating variations accuratly, due to your knowledge of the game and experiences. You have more book knowledge especially in the opening also then most OTB players who are below say 1800+. Un-ranked players online have access to chess books; including opening books and analysis boards so don't make as many tactical errors. All this adds up to a lot of skills improvements. Of course as you said some do indeed cheat and use the PC programs unfairly. So i understand your point of view in this. Also as a note, i have seen lower rated players beat masters in OTB games on occasions.

I have found it interesting that some players can be arrogant even when they are not that good at chess. Take for example a player of say 1200+ beats a player say 900+ and then tells them how bad they are and they should learn to play chess or something hurtful like that, forgetting they are still beginners themselves. Don't worry about players who act this way, there is always somebody better then you or them. I myself am decent enough a player but know that my skills are nothing to really brag about either. How good u r is relative to your competition. there is always someone better then you.

Most higher players i have found to be of good character always encouraging and being more then willing to help much lower players improve.

I haven't encountered the arrogant players in abundance, indeed not quite much at all, though perhaps it is because they are typically talking down. My experience on other sites is more along the lines of people telling you that you "got lucky" after you beat them, regardless of whether you in fact did. Sure, I get lucky. In fact, I get lucky quite a bit. I'm pretty good at mousing and time management in 1 0, 2 0, and 3 0 games. But of course every once in awhile, I win on the board as well.

Easy. You were playing Kasparov! He likes to keep a low-profile on the Internet, hence all the random lower-rated user-ids he plays with.

haha I lose to Fischer and Lasker every time I lose a game..their spirit takes over my opponent. LOL

and I've lost a good bit

I have not noticed that. A few rude players not necessarily higher rated, but for the most part i've found good sportsmanship. Infact i've become really good friends with a few who crush me in nearly every game we've played, but are always helpful.

Although I don't play in the live chess nearly as much as the other

i agree

You'll always find jerks like that in chess.  Typically only online though.  Very few real-world OTB players are like that.  Use it as fuel to make yourself better, but don't fire back at them.  Chess should be a gentleman's game.  By the way, these people who "own" other chess players in 1 minute games are not so great.  A chimp could come up with wins in 1 minute chess.

Rookbuster

The best way to deal with the situation is ignore it and study study study to get better, because although many great players were born with a knack at chess many of them are great due to their commitment to study

Rookbuster

Letting the "Superior" players "own" you is a great way to learn how to "own" some others yourself.  Losing is not always bad!

chass1949

I'm fairly new to this site. I've only played a few games at best. I don't study too much, at all. I still have a great time because I always remember that chess is a GAME.  You can't take it too seriously.  How many folks on chess.com make their living playing chess?   If you try to prove you're "superior" to others on this site I'm betting the other areas of your life are pretty miserable.

dlordmagic

Its a psychological tactic. To some players winning is everything. Meant to get in your head a little. You find this particular tactic in just about every form of competition. The best way to deal with them is to deflate there egos by beating them.

Fat guy topics are much more fun.

hey everyone thanks for your comments i appreciate your opinions and insight maybe i just happened to be on live chess at a bad time one night and ran into a few idiots, oh well these things happen. oh and to ericmittens i am quite familiar with competition i compete regularly in my local pool hall's 9 ball tourney and have won it several times. i played football in highschool and competed in martial arts tournaments until i was 23. i don't wanna sound like i'm bragging or anything i'm just saying i am familiar with competition and proper sportsmanship. believe me i've had worse things done to me in competition than ridiculous taunting.

vsarun

I have never noticed that before. All the higher rated players I played with were kind

Irish_Chess86

I have noticed it sometimes. When I first started here I was playing against someone with a far higher rating than me and once he took my knight he kept typing, "resign, resign, I will beat you, resign". It's very rude!
