Why do Americans like Bobby Fischer?

I mean, he hated Americans, even though he was American.

What are Americans thoughts on this?

Lots of Americans hate this country. Bobby Fischer hated that the government subsidized the Israeli military. Lots of Americans agree with that sentiment.

Actually, Bobby Fischer had something called  Asperger's Syndrome.

It's roughly translated to 'lonely genius' syndrome. He was the kid in school who everybody picked on, couldn't mak a friend, couldn't get a date, but completely dominated his report card.

Hey, I read that one off the Asperger's Syndrome page. (Apparently, Bill Gates has it too)

So either the doctors are wrong, or you are.

Ah. I didn't actually notice the backthreads. I just commented after reading a random medical site.

I regard Robert James Fischer as the best chess player ever! (Fischer once said: "Only patzer and friends call me Bobby."

Yes, indeed Fischer was very intelligent. What the lack of social competence is concerned we don't know the reasons. Asperger has never been tested so it's only a rumour. (I guess it was something about his father which made him angry. If it was true that both of his parents were jews maybe you can understand - not accept - his reactions and perhaps also his hatred.)

Wolfgang Unzicker once wrote: "I played Fischer 8 times. His behavior on and off the board was excellent." (Therefore later - maybe after Fischer became WC - something must have changed this. Was it the feeling that FIDE and America didn't help him for "his title" against An. Karpov?)

Bobby who?

Maybe the core of Bobbies being was that he thrived in the challenge, and he found one in chess, devoted most of his life to it and when he reached his pinnicle the challenge had gone, but as he had devoted so much time to chess and not much else...Well,like a lot of old folk when they retire from work, they become lost, not knowing what to do.I bet there's a few masters around sense this problem.  Do you think kasparov sensed this? And that is why he changed direction before it was too late.

Maybe Americans sympathised and empathised with bobby and this is why he is liked.

Anyone who knew Fischer personally should speak first and loudest.

Maybe there is none here that new him so speculation is on the menu until that happens. Maybe no one should speculate or discuss  any historic event!

I believe one of the major symptoms of Asberger's disease is love of dear Bobby. He was such a gentleman. People don't give him enough credit for restraining himself from being rude to his opponents, as we know he had every right to be. Dear lovely Bobby is a tragic case of a genius bitten by the rabid dog of misfortune and misunderstanding. He was above being a moron. He was a transcendant jerk. A metaphysical jackass. For Americans, beloved Bobby was one of their own. Selfish, lacking empathy, and petty, Bobby is forever a symbol of the freedom to be annoying.

Thank you, Stevie65! It's an excerpt from my book entitled, "A World without Bobby". I use many Depression-era photographs to capture my feelings, and I'm sure the feelings of many fans around the world.

I'm trying to make a deal with the church. I think the book(gospel) should be inserted into the bible, right after Revelations. So you may be able to find a free copy at your local hotel.Smile
