Why do people move so fast in rapid?

I've been noticing a reoccurring theme among rapid players at my range. You would think people would play slower in rapid compared to blitz but all my recent opponents blitz out all their moves with no thought. I've beat a 1500 with a 2 knights french in a few moves, someone hung their queen with 27 minutes on their clock, and in my most recent game someone spend .2 seconds and hung their bishop on move 4 with almost 30 minutes left and resigned. I am zooming to 1500 rapid without a problem. I am curious to see when people slow down to think and don't understand why these opponents don't play blitz or bullet.

Its an online pattern.  People will post how that want to improve, and dont understand why they aren't getting better???

99.9999% of the time its the same theme.  Playing nothing but speed chess.  And those that will reply: "I play daily chess..."  And you look at there daily chess games, and they are playing 30+ moves in a day and losing.  So they are still playing speed chess.

I just noticed that about daily as well! I actually looked at my opponents games and realized they played a lot of blitz and bullet. I guess the secret to becoming an intermediate player is to slow down. That will be my new advice for people asking for some.

Time management is not easy thing to master. I mostly play slowly, at an ok pace, but in some games I can't recognize myself and just play too fast. That is not often, but can happen from time to time.

one time my oponent took MORE THAN 30 minutes to dicide a move... RAPID SUCKS

because im used to play 30 seconds bullet and feel to play quickly even in rapid and blitz

I have spent 45 minutes on a move.  And luckily it worked out.

That makes a lot of sense as well llama! It could apply to some of my opponents. I think if they treat it like speed chess though they might have better chances at flagging their opponent in a lower time control. Even as inflated as the points are on here, a 1500 should evaluate a 3 move trade line before blindly capturing. When I made this new account I noticed some of the 1200's were playing better than the 1400's.

I wish my opponents did that...

But seriously, it might be because they play too much blitz?

I quit playing and studying competitive OTB chess, and haven't played in a tournament in 14 months.  In that time i will play the occasional online game of 3/2 chess.  Yes, it has ruined my long game, ruined how i think, I rush, and my game has gotten worse.

Compared to other places, chess.com ratings are not that inflated actually. Here is some rough estimate:

I had opposite examples as well, I managed to lose on time once in an hour per side game, though it was only once, and I have won like that 5-10 times due to time out.

That is an interesting article thanks! Timeout is a rare thing for me as well. Most of my games are decided by tactics or hanging material.

I play fast in rapid, but I don't blitz out moves unless it is the opening. I just like to have more time on my clock than my opponent, so I don't get into time pressure. I mostly play 10 mins if I play rapid though, it sounds like you are describing 30+ minutes.

It is mostly 10 minutes which is why I just switched to 30 and people played faster!! Also yes basic opening setups and moves are pretty easy to play. I play the pirc and noticed that people will often give up the e4 pawn or push prematurely  which lets black equalize. Rather than responding to my moves they will play what they usually do fast and I'll gain an advantage.

When I make a hasty move and hang a piece it’s usually because my wife is yelling at me for playing chess. I always assume if the other guy does the same thing it means some wife or girlfriend is mad at him.
