Why do players always stare at the board whilst playing?

lol i dont mind if you make jokes about my baldness ,
no ipswich matt i was trying to block out the adjudicator passing by the board plus i think i was umming and aahing a sac , my hair went a few years after the photo was taken leaving me so homerified

Dick Hunter, I beat you easily. Clearly you were not looking at the board, and were busy hunting...!
'Dick Hunter' Wow, that's so funny, I've never heard that before. And it only took you, er.. three months to come up with it.

Here's the game in which you 'beat' me. I'll let other people decide if they think you were looking at the board or not.

no dick hunter, that is the game I let you win after I kicked you butt and you were crying so much

How did he even win?
When a strong payer is trying to visualize a position several moves in the future, looking at the current position can be a distraction. Many top players look away from the board when doing deep calculations, or close their eyes.
