Why do players always stare at the board whilst playing?

lol i dont mind if you make jokes about my baldness ,

no ipswich matt i was trying to block out the adjudicator passing by the board plus i think i was umming and aahing a sac , my hair went a few years after the photo was taken leaving me so homerified

I usually notice them looking away not at the board.

When a strong payer is trying to visualize a position several moves in the future, looking at the current position can be a distraction. Many top players look away from the board when doing deep calculations, or close their eyes.

I read somewhere they look away from the board before making a move because they can no longer write down their move before playing it, like a last minute blunder check.
