Why do you play chess?

Personally, I've played chess since I was 5, but never did it seriously.
When I became a musician I understood years after that Chess is a great way to improve the analytic side of the brain, which helps very much in the creative process (you can't create music unless you are VERY good at calculations).
But after I took some chess courses, the whole thing started to make sense by itself. I started to find the art and the message of the game as an independent way of self-expression. I just love the game, I think there is no other game that could possibly feel better. The sense, the feeling that you can ever improove is just great, very much like in music.

My current job doesn't require a lot of thinking, so when i get home, i find playing chess gives my brain a good workout.

The reasons aren't all connected, so I will number them:
1. Chess is an ancient and enormous culture of people that transcends language.
2. It's a game of infinite possibilities.
3. You can learn a lot about yourself and how you respond to life by how you play chess.
4. Your skill at chess can increase with your character as a person--and vice versa.
5. A duel to the death without actually spilling blood. What could be more savage or more humane?
6. You can spend your entire life playing and never master it ... we can grasp its perfection but never reach it. This is why I think many are obsessed ...

It shows the simplicity of the human brain that such a simple game can be such a myriad of interest, time, and energy to us. We're only that good.
Imagine how much more complicated it could be with a few added squares and different pieces...

I agree with Rickdeckard's number 3 and number 5.
Why do I play chess?
I play chess because I used to play checkers and decided, hey what the heck, it's the same board, might as well learn about Checker's cousin, Chess. So I went to a nerd friend of mine and asked him to show me how the odd looking peices moved around.
After showing me everything, I said Oh...Okay thanks, let's play.
I lost sorely and didn't pay attention to the Mystery of Chess for a while.
I learned my Junior year of high School ( I am 18 now and a Freshman in college). I only went back to Chess my senior year, the day after graduation.
I was having a get together to bid farewell to a summer class and there happened to be a chess board, no checkers. So I was like oh great. So because I didn't want to sit around, I asked one of my other classmates if he wanted to play
BTW he was an honor student, with pens in his pocket and a calculator in his shirt pocket. He bragged saying, yeah im part of the chess club, and I just said I play for fun.
I beat him with a very violent stance and ever since that time I thought to myself hunh! I do have something going Chess-wise. Ever since, I've played here online, on Yahoo! games and I bought a program for my phone which I play on. I also love Chess Titans on Vista even though I don't have it but I 've played it many times.
Chess makes me feel...intelligent, it's calculating, logic and strategy at a very critical level, I understand why it's art would bring a tear to the eye, it's a very powerful sentiment.
Overall I like chess, because unlike video games there are no "cheats" its like tumbling headlong into a rayonning crisp blue ocean and letting the fresh waves splash over your countenance as you enter its watery depths with the experience of treading the water your guide and strategy planning for your time in the water...
ahhhh

Hi Erik!
To be quait fair, I was seeking a kind of refuge when suddenly I have found chess.com
Now, I really enjoy playing chess with persons throught the world in spite of the fact that I'm not such a good player.
Bye!

For most of my life It has been the simple beauty of it that I love. And they way that simple beauty leads to the most complex puzzles I have found in any game.
I also play because of how it helps organize my cluttered mind. I find that if I play a quick game of chess or two before I study or work then my mind is in the right frame of mind to be more productive in my studying and work.
I also enjoy it because winning, losing, or drawing the game I am playing depends on me and my abilities. I can't say it had to do with a referee missing a call or a teammate letting me down. The result is all up to me (I know in a tourny some of this could happen but it is extremely rare compared to other competitions).

wow.... number 3! If that is true my life is more a mystery than I thought! I playit cuz I need something to exercise my brain that I can do from my magic chair.
