Why does the game end before you take the king?

Maybe the other player won't see the move so he doesn't take it. So the game shouldn't be over. It's the same as ending the game 2 moves early, if you have guaranteed checkmate in 2 moves

Answer is:because it is the rule. And in a rapid game(at least in Italy),if your "eat" or take opponent king you commit an illegal move and you lose the game.

It's one of those little weird traditions about chess that the game today respects.

There would be no difference to the game if kings could be taken off the board though - in fact, that would make the game easier for some novices to understand.

If you take your opponent's king, that means he/she did an illegal move before.
