Why dont more masters/GM's use this site?

Well lets be honest this site obviously caters more to the average/developing chess player. Do you think that other features/community incentives should be added to attract more masters/ grandmasters?

This site is run on a commercial basis. It only attracts those strong players who want to make money out of the game. Many of those are based in the United States, and all of them are second rate. The site can offer neither the money nor the kudos to attract stronger players.

Well with that attitude they sure can't. I'm entertaining possibilities here get on that page.. what do you think they would need to do to attract those stronger players?

buddy i recognize appreciate and enjoy the participation of the masters that use and contribute to the site already. I'm just pointing out the fact that its a site that is mostly used by and run for the average player and am entertaining the idea of what would it take to attract the use of more advanced players then already use it kind of like an ICC type thing......  i dont understand the confusion/opposition to this notion

CerebralAssassin

let's not forget GM Julio Becerra, the highest rated OTB player here.

Surely VB84 alias GM Vladimir Belov is even stronger.

There are currently 181 titled players on the site and that number grows on a regular basis.

Did you not notice the fact that there are more non-titled players than titled players? Your post seems to indicate that it should be otherwise. Of course chess.com will work toward the benefit of the majority of their players. They are exceptional in that they can do so while maintaning great value for the titled players.

he means when mr. anand ( or mr. topolov, mr. carlsen, blah blah blah) joins the site, his problems will be resolved.

Strong players like to play blitz (Live) chess against strong opponents. Most play at very fast time limits (1-0 etc) and like playing against equally strong players. Even with my lowly rating I have to wait to get a game  while if I go on other sites I can an opponent immediately. In general  titled players  do not contribute to forums --given how rude many people are to them it is amazing any contribute here at all.

Bottom line  improve Live chess and try and get more titles (IM/GM etc) to play that here and others will follow.

Things master do on the net: 1) play blitz and bullet 2) read news

Everything else: forums, game explorer, chess mentor and so on are for mostly for club-level players. Well, maybe Tactics Trainer stands a chance, but very few people know about it.

1) Chess.com is improving in terms of live chess, but it will take a while to get recognition. 2) With only one news story per day (usually with no exclusive info, just basic stuff anyone can find on the net himself) it's hard to compete with leading chess news websites.

I am not criticizing Chess.com or saying it's bad. Just my take on the question asked by the topic-starter.

Interesting to see how some users get defensive about this. The OP raises an interesting issue and develops it quite reasonably on his responses, but people insist to give the "Did you not notice the fact that there are more non-titled players than titled players" kind of answer.

Maybe a factor for the relative lack of widely known GMs is that the site is relatively new on the business and is disputing space with other sites that have been established for a long time. From the titled players' convenience perspective, why move from a community that you know that works and where most of your peers play? Chess.com may be right on the strategy of first bringing the average-strength mass to their venue and then use this volume as an advantage to attract more titled players. More average-strength players also means that they will have more money to pay for titled player's articles, enriching the site and again making it more attractive.

For such a young enterprise, Chess.com has already covered a lot of ground. Of course there are issues to be addressed, specially with Live Chess and dealing with cheating, but the site's development seems about right to me.

What's with the personal attacks geek?  You, who wave your abuse report ticket numbers around like they mean something, take every chance you get to get a dig in against Reb.

I heartily agree that there are plenty of non-titled players who post here who have a tenuous grip on reality,

Flamma_Aquila

They probably would get tired of 1,000 group invites and 10,000 chess game challenges every time they log in.

I would challenge them, just in the 1 in 1,000,000,000 chance that I could then brag "I beat a GM."

He (aj415) wasn't clear about what he wanted. Community incentives? Please explain this more. What features what be appealing to a titled player? Simuls, which let them beat up multiple ppl at a time? aj415, sorry, I don't quite understand what you want.

i agree with both points here.

1. our Live Chess is not yet where it needs to be (though we're getting closer...)
2. our news section isn't a high-priority for us at this time

we'll get there eventually!

  1. Strictly speaking, only master/GM's that don't use this site (and hence haven't read this question) can answer it accurately.
  2. In what way, do you feel, would GMs modify the site - if they were here in greater quantity?
