Why has chess survived?

The mark of a well-designed game of strategy is that it is easy to learn to play, but incredibly difficult to form a winning strategy.

I think it's because most games aren't much fun for two beginners-starting tennis players won't even get the ball over the net. But two chess beginners will happily enjoy taking each other's hanging pieces and missing mates in one. Even if they never improve, the game is still fun.

I was really good at chess when I was 18-20! Why did I play? I have no idea... I stopped playing for more than 30 years and then discovered chess.com...
I started again and after the usual rubbish start hickups Im on 2000 rating...Guessd I have reached my limited. So why has chess survived? Because of sites like chess.com...
Thanks (but guys...that's NOT a reason to increase membership fees)
never knew the fees went up!! how much?

(Is it my imagination, or did somebody just tell me not to be silly on here? And she's a veteran too, for cryin out loud!)
