Why Is the Rook so Short?

first time i saw a naked woman with a bunch of horses on her, lady godiva would make quite a good knight, time to design a new chess set.

Shouldn't that be 'goldurned nekked' and hosses? And, 'that ther lady Godiva AND, 'Time ter dersine' etc.
I think you are an imposter.

OK, chess spy, thanks for correcting my normally rednecked grammar! sorry i must be hanging out too much with upper class bichiz down at the local these days.

Buford. Y'all still got it mate...
However to bring things back to more intelligent posting. (some might say).
this excerpt from Prof. Sir Alan Fersht's book.
Larger rooks: Staunton and Imperial Mark 2
Around the turn of the century, the ever-active Moffatt introduced sets in which the height of
the pieces more closely reflected their value on the chessboard. The traditional Staunton rook
is shorter than the bishop. The new rook is slightly taller than the bishop, which is marginally
taller than the knight and. (Figure 86). The knight is carved and not Xylonite.

So we see that although Jaques followed the traditional sizing of sets with heights ranging from the middle down, the other reasonable alternative with BCCs idea of making the pieces more closely reflect their ( later to be called Shannon) value, was explored to some success (If only for 15 years) by BCC who's sets are very prized by those lucky few who can afford them.,

Here is an interesting rook which, whilst short, can be higher than any other pieces.
You mistakenly posted a picture of an airplane instead of a rook.

Another tall rook
Cool looking rook. But what if I need a second queen? I don't think turning that thing upside down would work.

Anyway, Who's looking at the pieces? This is 'art'
Took me a few minutes before I noticed the knights.

As Lloyd Bentsen would say, "You're no Jackie Gleason."

That was not the first time Buford slipped. Yesterday he said "would've."

Another example from BCC
I don't like the tall rook. Guess it's 'cause I've become accustomed to the short one.
