olympics would be boring if people are just sitting like that, thinking for moves
why no chess in Olympics
. however the average person doesnt even know the rules of chess, let alone appreciate the finer points and skill of the game.
The brodcastings in Norway in Carlsen -Anand WC was popular among lots of people who barely knew the moves.
Much because of the commentators,
And Houdini. And of course because our local lad was in the contest.
Very bad chessplayers could in fact guess the move of Magnus several times. Good chessplayers (1300 fide) actually will choose a good move maybe two out of three times.

The thing about entire childhoods being sacrificied for a (usually-failed) shot at being in the olympics has always upset me. By that token, though, I wonder how many hours of how many years kids sacrifice who grow up to maybe become chess greats. I'm seriously asking; I have no idea.
well there are many kids with rich parents who hire one on one chess tutors for about 100 per hour, with the result that some 12 year olds can win against 1700 plus adults. however i dont think those kids usually suffer, because to be tht good, the kid would probably have to enjoy the game to start with. i dont think many parents would force their kids to learn chess if they didnt like it. obviously though there would be exceptions, but i dont think there would be too many wasted childhoods from learning it. i think chess is one of those things you have to enjoy in order to become good at it.
i wish i had some sort of coaching when i was very young. the asshole who taught me when i was 7 only told me the moves of each piece and i had to work the rest out myself. he only let me play when there were no adults around. i lost many games against him because i simply didnt know the rules and he wouldnt tell me till it was necessary in order for him to stop me from winning. (he was 16). if i had had proper coaching at that age who knows how good i may have become? as it was i didnt play serious chess till i was almost 40, and even then i had to teach myself, so i guess i will never know.
Have you ever seen what Craig Stadler and John Daly look like? They are obese dudes who were top PGA golfers in their primes. Hard to say golf requires physical "fitness" based on that evidence.
virtually every sport has former champions who have retired that end up obese and flabby ....
DUH!

They were obese while they were competing you idiot.
Some chess players can be athletes.
some chess players are total wankers - should wanking be an olympic sport too?
