Why to buy Luxury Chess Pieces?

You know, I am still deciding whether he is bragging OR simply stating that he just likes luxury chess sets and thinks everyone should have one

Sultan, not everybody is able to buy a ferrari. The point in driving a car is to get from A to B. there is no difference here.

The point of chess is to have a nice game. It doesn't matter if you use massive gold and silver pieces artfully hand crafted or cheap wooden pieces. Of course it is nice to own and play with a beautiful chess set, but that is not the purpose. Chess pieces are to play with. That is their purpose and for that reason good pieces are of a certain weight, volume and material. Like box wood, which is i.m.o. the best material for chess pieces as they must be play-resistent, even when the one  who loses a game throws his king on the floor in anger.

The difference between a flame and a forest fire is smaller than the difference between a a flame and no fire.

I'm glad that people can buy beautiful chess pieces and enjoy a chess game even more, so have fun!

By the way, as you are so anti-conformism, do you play chess by the rules that everybody conforms to or do you make rules up as you play?

Very nice looking set! If you enjoy chess and want something special,I see no reason not to own such a treasure....You are "not" bragging!Just hoping others will appreciate your pride of ownership.

The 2 sets pictured in this thread are indeed quite nice.  Congratulations to both of you and may you enjoy your games with the sets.

Chess is my adult hobby.  I started learning and playing the game at age 30, so I am realistic about not becoming a Grandmaster or anything like that.

I play Chess for enjoyment.  That enjoyment includes the competitive adrenaline that happens.  I also enjoys the pure artistry of the different piece configurations on the board and how they can be changed and manipulated to win a game.

Pretty early in my play, I realized that plastic sets were just the bare minimum.  Of course having a weighted set made handling the pieces much better.  But the plastic pieces were too bland in detail and finish.

So, I started playing with wood pieces.  I find the quality wood sets to be nicer to look at and play with.  Do they make me a better player?  The answer is of course not.

After the first few moves of a Chess game, I lose sight of the individual pieces and their details and find I am looking at the board images of the pieces on the squares.

But, near the end of the game, I have found myself looking at the pieces and enjoying the quality of the set.

As I said, Chess is my adult hobby which I play for my personal enjoyment.  I really enjoy a nice wooden Chess set to play my games with.  I am certainly not harming anyone with whatever set I use, so I will continue to enjoy.

The same reason buy luxury watches n car and pen and drinks... its all down to disposable income

I don't think that playing with a nice chess set will make you a better player, that would be silly. I said: "I felt..." is like feeling in love. you might feel like you could fly, but you know you can't I think TheJackalC4 expressed it better than what I did when he said: "Psyche is most definitely a part of chess. A chess set/ board can most definitely help create a positive or calm mental state. While I don't think it can help you play better chess, I do believe it can help you play your best chess". I probably will still this words and update the forum lol

I liked it so much that bought all 3 colors. I bring it with me to chess tournaments and every time I take them out someone always says "That's a nice set" or something like that.

THIS is my reason. After getting introduced to the rules of the game with the cheapest chess set that you can buy from a grocery store or a pharmacy, you quickly realize how ugly they are. 

Playing with unweighted club pieces at chess clubs is fine because of regulations and you're not there to window-shop anyway. You're there to win!

But when I study OTB, I eventually realize that I have to like what I'm staring at for hours, both pieces and board. This is no different from chess.com players who change the color of the board and the style of the chess symbols on the screen. 

Alekhine died beside his Druke and Fischer used his personal Dubrovnik chess pieces to train and for all his photo ops prior to the 1972 match.

Use whatever works for you!

Someday, I will have to get a nice chess set.   Probably not quite as fancy as that Chetak set, but  something nice.
