Why Was Game "Abandoned"?

I strongly believe the rules could be improved. Today this happened to me on a 10 minutes per side game and my clock didn't advance 60 seconds, it was only around 30, but my disconnection started during my opponent's turn. I strongly believe the disconnect time rule should consider only the time lost during your own turn, especially if this was thought as the maximum amount of time chess.com wants people to wait for their opponent if a disconnection happens. If you disconnect and the time taken into account is the one during your own turn, then the maximum amount of time the opponent has to wait is the same!! Because the opponent did not have to wait at all while he/she was thinking, that is not waiting time!! There is absolutely no change in the max waiting time if chess.com changes that. Likewise, it gives a much better chance for players to solve the issue as they many times will also have a % of the opponent's thinking time (which, as mentioned, is not waiting time for the opponent).  As how the rule is right now, 50% of the time people don't have to wait 10% of the base time, but less, because there is a 50% chance the disconnection will occur during the turn of the player who did not disconnect.

This just happened to me in a 3/2 arena game.  I sat there waiting for my opponent to move then got the game abandoned notification and all the sudden his last move appeared on the screen. https://www.chess.com/a/2pHwt9La2YzEA

Second time it happened to me and I find it incredible frustrating.

Happens to me very often . Waiting for opponent's move his time is ticking and suddenly it shows that I abandoned the game and I loose. Very often sometimes a few games daily end up like that. Frustrating. There is a bug somewhere there. What I found strange is that sometimes it will happen that it shows my opponent abandoned the game but this doesn't happen as often as my loss. I think ratio is something like 5:1 eg for 5 lost games in this way I'll win one.

Had the same issue today. I was waiting for my opponent to move, and all of the sudden I lost, because I was the one that abandoned the game?

I think the “game abandoned” issue will never be fixed. This thread was started in 2018 (three years ago), and nothing has been done. All they worry about is the players not getting bored. Unfortunately, in our modern world, the marketing rules are more important than anything else, the chess rules, for example. I was about to take one of the payment plans, but now I am going to find an alternative chess platform.

RIP, I had my game marked as "abandoned" less than 10 seconds after my opponent made a move. It was also my first match, so I lost 100+ points for it. This problem is disappointing.

I enjoy the content of the site but trying to play here has become impossible due to abandonment.  Never have this issue with Lichess.

You left the game and automatically forfeited.

I have solved the “abandonment” problem. And soon it will already be three months as I haven’t got any similar trouble playing chess. The solution is to change the platform. Good luck!

I got abandoned for no reason in a live game. I was just waiting for my opponent to make his move and after he moved, I didn't even have time to react, the game was abandoned and I lost for no reason.

1. My network was good.

2. I already had more than 20 moves before my half time.

3. In winning position.

4. The game got abandoned without any reason and I lost.

What is the cause behind this? Is this some kind of hack by the opponent?

The clients never directly connect so your opponent can't impact your connection.

had another abandonment loss today. connection couldn't have dropped for more than 10secs.

This is something they're gonna need to address I think. No connection issues on my end. It's none of their garbage related to system resource usage or anything. It wasn't an issue of waiting too long. I castled and then it said I abandoned the game. It was an unrated game against a friend, so no big deal in that case, but if this happens in a rated game, I'm sure there are other sites that work better.

Just happened to mesad.png

Same happened to  me at the same time (few minutes ago). I had a clear winner over a player +100 on me.

And just happened again! That's twice today yippee! I was white and was planning to trade my bishop and knight for blacks rook and pawn.
