Why would anyone pay for membership on chess.com when there exists great alternatives that are free?
Because chess.com has the most cheaters, which makes things all the more challenging.

WoW
i have paid for a chess.com account in the past - probably a sum total of 2 years subscription over the course of my time here.
i don't currently have a paid subsciption for 3 reasons...
1. the two "lower" plans contain very little value, and there is no video content for non-diamond members.
2. the "australia tax" on subscriptions is unacceptable. if i am paying, i should pay the same amount as USA users (adjusted according to exchange rate). if i am to sign up now i pay a USA membership fee, then a 30% markup on the exchange rate.
3. there is another website that everybody knows about that is more responsive, better functionality, open source and completely free.
oh and one more reason - chess.com's communication strategy about cheating and cheating allegations is not satisfactory. there was a very high-level accusation in last year (2017)'s pro chess league that i did not feel was adequately handled by the site administrators. it involved some very strong players and (tangentially) a top super GM. this incident has discouraged me from contrubting financially to chess.com

You are paying so Barney Rubble (Erik), can drive a corvette.
He's like the sloth (from Goonies) of the chess world they're hiding in the basement. He's hates chess and all the people. But he has the domain name and they have to endure him.

Is there a markup? I see the premium level as a bit under AUD11/month, which I believe is is about USD8.30/month (close enough to USD/100 per year).
I'm not rich but it's cheap and it does have some pretty nice perks. Chess.com is not perfect the lag time and disconnects prevent me from playing blitz here.
For me:
$100 / yr isn't very much for a site you are on regularly.
The Gold membership works out to only $2.42 per month, or 8 cents a day. Seems like a good bargain to me. But people will complain no matter how low the price. Too many spoiled self-absorbed whiners in the general population.
I used to pay for their tactics trainer, but stopped using it after they turned it to a mindless speed contest. Now, I am mostly paying for "sponsoring" a site that I heavily use.
@sandstad You hardly seem qualified to comment about this site, you played only 1 blitz game in 2018, 1 blitz game in 2016, prior to that your games were in 2014.
Play more, then comment
