Why you shouldn't be rude

I've never posted here before, but I thought this deserved a post.

Played someone on live, who was rated around 1730, and I was rated 1581. Small conversation at the start went like this:

Him: Hi

Me: Hi

Him: learn how to play babe

Him: Go to hell

Me: ?

So it must have felt quite embarassing when he lost.

I played Black. Enjoy.

You played a very clean and dominant game over your opponent! The ratings should be reversed! lolo   White could have played 23.Rg1, but then 23......Re1 You are a strong player with more class then your opponent, brovo!!!!!!!!!!!

GhostNight

When I had a 1511 USFC rating, I was amazed how many 1700 and 1800 players I beat, thought maybe I was lucky and they had a off day?? hmmmm?

Would love to have a freindly game with you one day! BobWink

I recognise that text and know who it was  Frown

the lower their rating the higher the likelihood they are disrespectful.

The one thing i have noticed about playing online as opposed to playing OTB is that people are much ruder.  Hiding behind a monitor allows people to act in a way they wouldnt act in person.  In over 30 years of OTB play i have had 1 rude experience and after a talk with the kids coach it didn't happen again.  But online i repeated encounter people being rude.

Dont take it personal, its just people not knowing how to relate to others.  Either lacking social skills, lack of parenting, discipline, or may other reasons.  If they are incredibly ignorant and or  block them, and report them.

Additionally...post the game, chat, and the opponents name.  Public shaming is a powerful tool.

heinzie

I disagree, the higher the rating, the more unpleasant the person behind the number

heinzie

I disagree, public shaming is more embarrassing for the complaining side, especially on such Internet forums it's so sad

heinzie

I disagree, stop posting three times in a row dude

How so?  What is so embarassing about pointing out someones childish and rude behavior?

heinzie

It's childish in itself (nothing in particular against children)

I have no intention of giving the person's name. I wouldn't form an opinion based on what someone else says. He/she will no doubt make a reputation for him/herself anyway, as kohai said.

And Cpawn, I agree :)

Wasn't taking it personally, but kind of hoping the person I'm talking about reads this and is humbled a little XD

i have had a string of rude opponents on here, and i really don't know how to handle the situation because i don't take kindly to being insulted for no reason. one thing i have experienced (and i suppose this is a coincidence, because it is sort of regionalist) is instances with players from india. i want to be diplomatic here, but recently i have played a handful of games with players from india and they really aren't nice to me. generally they tell me to play fast (even though the clock is 30 minutes) and i reply with "no" and then they continue to tell me to step on it, or resign, or something similar.

also i have experienced people calling me a dumb american, a loser, or just being incendiary when i move or they take my pieces. i can't stand it, but at the same time i don't want to stoop to their level.

also i must say i'm a bit disappointed that i can't curse, even so much to say d am n or s h it. so anyway... not that i want to cuss people out, but that's how i talk to myself regardless.

conversely, i have played against some really nice people from around the world. why can't we all just get along?

If childish behavior is not pointed out then how is it to be corrected?  I have children so maybe my outlook on this is different.

Learn how to disable chat and put people on ignore.

heinzie

Do you want to teach proper manners to the interwebz and the online community of chess bullies? Good luck...!

How strange since my experiences have shown that my most pleasant games have been against people from India, with the rudest being from the United States of Americia.
