It's possible, but not impossible. I wish him good luck to achieve his goal. Maybe, he might achieve it in just one year. Who knows???

I don’t think he will make it since he is scheduled to retire

No it won't. Even though he is the world champ, every grandmaster is stil trying their best to beat him. Wrong opinion. Bet ur jealous.

Motivation and perseverance is the key

Maybe if everyone bellow him has some ratings inflation and he is arround long enough to stop losing to many points for draws and losses. Pretty much if the top ten reach 2800 and he retains the title against them convinsingly then yes. If we have not to many people at 2800 and he doesn't win convinsingly then no.

If some Norwegian CEO or the Norway Government will award 10M USD to Carlsen for reaching 2900 milestone, he can get it. Guinness Book of World Record isn't enough motivation.

He will never reach 2900. In fact, he will never even get within 30 points of it. If he could have done it, he would have done it while in his twenties. Now, at the age of 30+, all hopes of reaching 2900 are gone forever. If he really believes that it is still possible for him to do so, then he is delusional, as is anyone else who thinks he could.

Don't peddle the myth that 30+ is over the hill for a chess player. Nakamura is 34 years old and is one of the favourites for becoming the next World Championship Challenger.

Carlsen is playing as well today as he ever has. He could be even better than he is now, if he could find enough motivation to keep working at it obsessively.

that's odd. I always thought that severe mental decline began at 30wink

Magnus has 2866,7 right now. Offcourse he could get within 30 points of 2900. Reaching 2900 will be difficult though.

Carlsen starts to experience motivational problems: he talks about not defending his title.

If Carlsen defends his title, he is likely to lose some rating from the inevitable draws.

He just got back to 2870 with his win a few minutes ago.

No Carlsen won't reach 2900.

Highly unlikely but not completely impossible.

He's hit 2870 today, I'm not saying he will achieve it, I'm just pointing out that don't underestimate him. Vishy is 52 and still beating top GM's, the brain doesn't deteriorate as fast as the body.

he will reach 2900 , all the naysayers think he is mediocre like them

You say that but I'd love for him to prove me wrong

OF COURSE I'M jEALOUS! These poor grandmasters will feel bad being 2700 while that guy is 2900. that's so depressing for them. When Magnus is 2800 he at least feels within their reach somewhat
