Women in chess?

Hi everyone.
This morning in class I casually mentioned that I played chess and my teacher said “Oh, that’s pretty rare isn’t it, women in chess? Why do you think there aren’t many women that play chess, it’s a largely male dominated game...” it was a really poor attempt at small talk I guess but I really didn’t know what to say; and the more he kept going the worse it got: “Do you think it’s because women have a different type of intelligence [and I rephrased it...] and don’t like reasoning like chess requires?”
I just said that pretty much every field is male dominated if males are the only ones that get attention and I just pretended like I didn’t hear the part about intelligence.

But now I’m thinking, what if he’s right? In elementary school I think I was the only girl in the chess club, and in my city we don’t even have a female team due to a lack of players. So why is it that women don’t typically play chess?

everyone in the office at my work is 90% female and everyone on the tools out in the feild is 99% male. just the way people are. . just enjoy the game you play. whats between the legs doesnt make a difference on 64 squares

Male dominated: yes. Different type of intelligence: unlikely. The lack of woman in the top 100 could very well be due to the total pool size m vs f.

I believe that while men and women's average IQ (if you even consider that to be a relevant factor) is about the same, but there are more intelligent and more dumb men than women. The distribution curve is wider for men, so to say. So while women overall aren't worse at chess, the few who excel at the game (2700s and upwards) are most likely men. Of course, this could be explained that fewer women play chess overall, but I believe in a combination of the two theories.

(This argument would also mean that there are more bad male chess players than bad female chess players)

He’s not right! To suggest that women don’t have logic/ reasoning skills is misinformed at best and sexist at worst. My answer would be cultural norms, not anything biological. Women can be extraordinary chess players: Judit Polgar, for example. Though personally I’m a beginner chess player and I’m absolutely terrible at it, I just started playing about a month ago (pretty casually). I was VERY surprised to find out that separate women’s teams/ competitions even existed! I’d assumed it would be one of the few sports where gender separation wouldn’t be a thing.

People who argue about this often bring up Judit Polgar. Problem is, one can't take a statistical outlier like Polgar and base an entire argument on it. However, she does prove that one can make it no matter who you are!

Chess is rather weird in the sports world since it doesn't have separate men's and women's tournaments. Rather, it is "women" and "open". So there isn't a strict "gender separation" as you said

I'm assuming that you are very young.

My ex-girlfriend is Italian and studied art in Florence (I've actually got some of her art on my wall above my head now).

There are lots of Italians where I live (home counties). Hung around with them a good deal. They are fairly moderate with regards to the feminist stuff.

The chess world is rather different, and is very feminist. Therefore little statements become a massively big deal.

I agree that it's surprising when first taking up chess to find men and women being separated, and I don't agree with it.

You drop 1000 marbles from a hill. 3 are green and 997 are yellow.

Your friend is down the hill and counts which color marbles are down first. Over and over again the two of you find that the yellow marbles dominate the top ten.

You conclude: yellow marbles are simply faster.

It’s not just about intelligent, it is also about physical status. Men can burn more energy in a short period of time, but women have a better stamina in long run. In chess, you need to burn energy in short period of time (every moment you think deep needs a lot of energy and you have a limited time to think), thus for men it’s easier to play chess. Women are good at some other stuff, and it is completely dependent on biological characteristics. Those fools who are saying that there is no difference between men and women, are just trying to be woke and they deny the entire biological branch of science (even they might be biologists and to be politically correct they might say the same nonsense, contradicting their own choice of study).

If you are good at X and I’m not, it doesn’t make you better than me. It only means you are better at X.

In addition to what I said, there might be other factors included, but saying there is no biological differences or biological differences doesn’t affect performance in certain fields is nonsense.

Also the argument about pool site nowadays is nonsense. These days modern mom and dads send their kids to chess club, no matter what is their gender. But girls usually don’t show interests and they stop playing chess, so the lack of number of adult female chess players is not because they are not familiar, it is because they are not interested or they find that they cannot catch up their other peers and left the game short after childhood.

So we conclude the green marbles can't get up the hill?

How many times does this topic have to be talked about before we can move on jesus christ.
