Women in chess?

This morning in class I casually mentioned that I played chess and my teacher said “Oh, that’s pretty rare isn’t it, women in chess? Why do you think there aren’t many women that play chess, it’s a largely male dominated game...” it was a really poor attempt at small talk I guess but I really didn’t know what to say; and the more he kept going the worse it got: “Do you think it’s because women have a different type of intelligence [and I rephrased it...] and don’t like reasoning like chess requires?”
I just said that pretty much every field is male dominated if males are the only ones that get attention and I just pretended like I didn’t hear the part about intelligence.
But now I’m thinking, what if he’s right? In elementary school I think I was the only girl in the chess club, and in my city we don’t even have a female team due to a lack of players. So why is it that women don’t typically play chess?
I believe that while men and women's average IQ (if you even consider that to be a relevant factor) is about the same, but there are more intelligent and more dumb men than women. The distribution curve is wider for men, so to say. So while women overall aren't worse at chess, the few who excel at the game (2700s and upwards) are most likely men. Of course, this could be explained that fewer women play chess overall, but I believe in a combination of the two theories.
(This argument would also mean that there are more bad male chess players than bad female chess players)

People who argue about this often bring up Judit Polgar. Problem is, one can't take a statistical outlier like Polgar and base an entire argument on it. However, she does prove that one can make it no matter who you are!
Chess is rather weird in the sports world since it doesn't have separate men's and women's tournaments. Rather, it is "women" and "open". So there isn't a strict "gender separation" as you said

can we put a stop to gender based threads. just invites the nonsense banter we all hear on the news already. its a board game people not the place for SJW

thats semi-true

I'm assuming that you are very young.
My ex-girlfriend is Italian and studied art in Florence (I've actually got some of her art on my wall above my head now).
There are lots of Italians where I live (home counties). Hung around with them a good deal. They are fairly moderate with regards to the feminist stuff.
The chess world is rather different, and is very feminist. Therefore little statements become a massively big deal.
I agree that it's surprising when first taking up chess to find men and women being separated, and I don't agree with it.

Your friend is down the hill and counts which color marbles are down first. Over and over again the two of you find that the yellow marbles dominate the top ten.
You conclude: yellow marbles are simply faster.
If you are good at X and I’m not, it doesn’t make you better than me. It only means you are better at X.
Also the argument about pool site nowadays is nonsense. These days modern mom and dads send their kids to chess club, no matter what is their gender. But girls usually don’t show interests and they stop playing chess, so the lack of number of adult female chess players is not because they are not familiar, it is because they are not interested or they find that they cannot catch up their other peers and left the game short after childhood.

Agreed

So we conclude the green marbles can't get up the hill?
