Worst first move for white?

Sort:
jaxpac

What is the worst first move for white and why?

In other words if you are playing black but you get to decide white's first move, what would you do to give yourself the best chance at a win?  And what sort of response would you play as black to take advantage of your "worst" first move?

trysts

Probably 1.Nh3. I don't know if I would say the move is bad, but if I'm playing black, I don't think I would worry that much about itSmile

Oh, and I would probably do 1...e5 against it.

1.f3 must be the worst.

You may laugh, but someone actually did this against me once although it went like this to be exact:

Probably Na3, since that one guy started a thread about it a while back.

Then again, since I'm an e4 player, I should dogmatically insist that d4 sucks.

Godallmighty ChessTrainor.  How could I ever forget him?

Oh and I forgot to mention ChessAssistant and a few other alias he goes by.

1. white resigns

IOliveira

I vote in the so called Tapel-Tomas opening (Na3 - Sodium Attack)

There are basically 2 reasons:

1. Masters do not like it .

2. ChessTrainor plays it.

This is enough.

don't ask these kinds of questions....we can only change the course of the game after the 2nd move of black....

its simply impossible to tell any move of white is bad.......

1. Nh3 is not terrible...it is definitely playable.  Not the best, but there are other options that are equally as "unstrong" as 1. Nh3.  The thing about it is that it limits the control of the center on move 1.  But worst?  What about 1. a4 then?  I think 1. h4 is better than 1. a4 - it is more aggressive.  Sure, it "uproots" White's kingside at move 1, but at the same time, Black has to pay attention to his kingside.

Deranged

No knight move is terrible. I've seen Viswanathan Anand (reigning world champion) move his knight to the rim of the board sometimes. But a move like f3 does no good whatsoever, blocks your knight in and makes your king vulnerable. I'd say f3 is the worst.

But even 1. f3 has its own merits - it was used in a system that Lasker used to use, with f3, g3, Bg2, Nh3-f2, and 0-0 - a simul idea.  Not the best in the world, but it worked.  And another idea,as played by Gedult, was the 1. f3 leading into a Blackmar Diemer Gambit.  It is all how you follow up the move that matters.

1. g4? is a strong candidate... I don't care what people say to support the "Grob" attack, it's trash.  As long as black just plays solid and doesn't blunder/get greedy, white is far worse and has no play whatsoever for his bad position.

No way man!  I am steadfast in my support of the Grob!  I may not be able to say the same about the Borg, but I still play it in correspondance and win.

Chessismaths

the worst move for white in a tournament is resigning then picking up his/her king and throwing it at the tournament director. my response to that would be to try not to laugh then fail and roll around on the floor laughing.

but in all honesty i reckon a4 is the worst opening move for white. i would reply with e4

heinzie

Whatever you do, all will transpose with reasonable follow-up play anyway

Another vote for 1.f3

Ghostly14

I'd agree with f3 being the worst.
