Worst sportsmanship I've ever come across..

.. in years of playing this website.

So here's the story, I'm relaxing last night and playing a few bullet/blitz games. My wireless mouse is playing up for bullet so I decide to play the slightly longer 15 minute games. Now, I'm pushing the 1600 rating range in bullet but rarely play 15m+ games, so that rating is sub-1000.

At move 23. Rg1, he starts swearing and calling me a "computer hacker, cheater" etc. I laugh and let him know that the computer I am on isn't even capable of running a few programs at once let alone a chess cheating program, but thanks for the compliment. Previous to that he said something about me being a cheater because of my low rating along with swearing. I let him know I rarely play longer games.

He says "enjoy the wait" with 10 mins or so on the clock. I say "no worries, I'll make a coffee". He then starts with the racist remarks. Peasant. Criminal. I'm glad our Queen rules your country, blah blah and then blocks the chat. Big deal. Then he makes a move later hoping I won't realise. Typical last ditch effort that doesn't work, he plays on until he's a couple moves from mate and disconnects. Now today I come on to play and he leaves all these comments on my page after blocking me.

"uses software........"
"your software thinks a lot don't it! lol"
he pastes a facebook link which isn't even mine
"
very lucky win for your software... but do not worry your type have criminal DNA built into your culture....... s you do not see cheating as moral.. filthy c*** :)"

I go onto his page to see recent games, all opponents are much lower rating than he is and out of the 10 he played I was his only loss. This is his "about me":
I have stopped playing rated games... out of the 5 I played... lousy p[layer with bad stat's suddenly were playing like pros! so I will never play rated again on this site......

So I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to discuss but I am interested in your experiences with bad/flat out poor sportsmanship. We've all had insults thrown at us out of frustration but this is over the top.. Anyway I would like to know any thoughts and here's the game:

So sad, when similar things have happened to me I just blocked them and forgot it.

Thanks for the replies. He has been abusing other players too from the looks of it, how do I go about reporting him?

dont be too harsh on him...he is probably just projecting all the self hatred he feels onto other people...let it wash over you and block him and delete his nasty notes and forget about him...

I guess you're right. He probably needs a hug in a big way.

Thought I'd share a similar experience I just had...

Little ways into the game, my opponent starts repeatedly chatting: "Choo choo!!!  Choo choo!" and "Bwahahahahaha."  I wasn't sure if he was suggesting I was playing an engine, or if he was using one, or if he was just going crazy, so I ask him, "Are you all right?"

Then he goes off on a rant accusing me of using an engine.  I tell him I'm flattered he'd think so, but if I used an engine, I'm sure I wouldn't lose so often.

Anyway, the game goes on and he keeps the rant going.  Lots of "choo choo" and he tells me I'm "famous" on the forums for using an engine.  That led me here, looking for any post with my name on it (unsuccessfully).

So that's it.  I know I shouldn't let people get to me when they talk trash, but somehow, it really does get under my skin.

I like how you renamed the guy Johnpeaceman instead of giving his actual name.

By the way, I do a similar thing when I lose a tough game to an opponent only before I post the message, I delete everything I said so I get my anger out but they never knew it was directed at them. I did this to one guy who actually friended me afterwards so it was like, Wow, I'm glad he didn't see that or he would have probably blocked me.

It's default mode for most human beings to complain when things go wrong, even if it's their own fault.  More enlightened individuals recognize this, and don't the take insults personally.  How could it be personal?, it's a stranger on the internet hiding behind an alias.  It's best not to respond to bad behaviour with more of the same -- instead let the situation defuse itself.

If they persist with the insults, they're trying to provoke an outburst from you to make you as miserable as they are.  Don't get sucked into that painful state of mind, respond politely instead.  Or if you don't feel that generous, just don't respond at all.

He does not like to get beaten by 900's

but cfredman, if you are only going to play blitz... you won´t have time to chat anyway, just disable it.

Well, to be honest, I would also be surprised with your play from somebody at 890 level. That's waaay better than that. So I suspect your opp wanted an easy win, that's why he played 960 rated player and then you played over the rating. Doesn't excuse him, I'm just saying...

OTOH, I struggle to barely float around 1200, and was also accused of cheating once. Heck, first of all, if I was cheating I wouldn't be at 1200... second of all, why would anyone cheat at chess, or any other game?

And third, this type of behaviour is common on other game sites. What's wrong with these people?

Ignoring it is good advice, but so is reporting someone who often behaves badly because it's (I think) against the rules. If you report them and it's deemed acceptable, no loss. If you report them and they are warned/banned, other players don't have to suffer the same abuse.

I do wish the site made it easier to report abuse in games & forums more easily than having to copy a link and email it... most sites have "report this thread" functions built in.

In future, take a screenshot so you have evidence, I don't know if you did that this time, then report him here:

Long streaks of losing (everyone gets them) induces many people to believe this site is loaded with cheats.

I conjecture they are correct.  Kinda frays the nerves as well.

Just Live With It.

The site is "essentially free," except for your multiple hardware, software, and access costs.

Avatar of mcmodern

so many people accuse others of cheating when they have no idea wtf they are talking about. I just tell them they are morons.
