Would 'cubits' be a good addition to chess.com?

Recently, I was playing on chesscube.com and I was thinking about a currency for chess.com. Would this help or hurt chess.com? Post your thoughts below...

I use to play on chesscube all the time.  The ridiculous cubit thing drove me away about a year ago. Good riddance.

RydalChess

No, no, no!   There is enough cheating on here as it is.

jbushell

You really can't buy much with it though.

There is a lot more content here, so it could work better, but I dont see much benefit in having it here too.

ajttja

or maybe like on gambit, with bitpoints

Thunder_Penguin

I'll safely assume that a currency is NOT a good addition to chess.com

(for now, at least)

RESULTS: (YES - NO)

0 - 3

Same here.  When Chesscube restructed their "rake" (percentage of each bet taken by the house) about a year ago, it made it impossible to play there anymore.  For instance, the site takes 25 cubits on a 25 cubit game. Therefore, if you win, you win zero cubits.  If you lose, you lose 25 cubits.

On a 50 cubit game the house takes 40 cubits.  Therefore, if you win, you win 10 cubits, if you lose, you lose 50 cubits.  Obviously it is impossible to maintain your cubits unless you are winning 80% of your games.

That's a ridiculous level of rake. They need to examine how poker sites work.

Exactly!!   They want to entice you by giving you enough free cubits/day to alow you to play 1 or 2 games free.  I wasn't enticed in the least by their subterfuge, athough I do log in every day just to get free cubits I never use.

I like the idea if chess.com does not take the game fee.

AKJett

NOOOOOOOOOO PLLLLLLLEASE I left chesscube because of this (I was a solid 2100 on chesscube but would always lose my first games....)

Thunder_Penguin

Okay, so no from everyone?

johnmusacha

A few years back, the main currency of Chesscube was "Crowns," which were worth 1,000 cubits, if I remember correctly.  Do you remember that?  You could cash them out for actual money deposited to a bank account or credit card until 2011.

spawkle529

im half and half..... Of course the idea of spending cubits to play games is very interesting. Even though i dont play chesscube ive seen people play .

I don't see how chess.com being more commercial could be a bad thing.

Bazinga!

I play in their warzones (the only thing they have that Chess.com don't really). I've built up a bank of about 10,000 cubits for free, just from placing in their 1 minute warzones and other tournaments. Of course, you can't do this unless you're one of the ones likely to win in those tourneys!

batgirl

Should you HAVE to bet in order to play chess??  That part always disturbed me.

I had earned 26,000 cubits before they changed the system.  Then I lost down to 700 in about 4 weeks even though I won more than I lost.  Now I have about 8,000 (I got for free- just by logging in once/day) but never use them and never intend to unless all other chess sites are down for some reason. I find their business model rather user-unfriendly.

Since this discussion centers around a competing chess site, I've moved it to the unmonitored Off Topic Forum where it can continue unimpeded.

I totally agree, and would never pay to play there - it would feel a bit like gambling money away. Ultimately if other people see no problem, it's their lookout! Maybe some like the "money" element (gambling is addictive to some after all)!
