The reason I am diamond is because I like the videos but now I see that there are lots of good videos on Youtube. So I might just let me membership run out and not bother to renew at all.
Would you buy a chess.com DiamondMembership if the cost was twice what it is now
I don't think everything should be free in chess but it needs to accessible. There is a lot of material available on Youtube, blogs, and other websites. It's not necessarily free because someone is paying for it through advertising and through corporate sponsorship of other material. Besides, many of us pay for internet access through their service provider.
Chess.com offers a lot of material but the owners have to realize who they are competing against and what they are competing for. There are some people who want to spend addtional money and they feel good doing it. Others don't want to spend any more than they are now. For $30 I can buy a lot of chess apps and maybe even an extra set. There a ton of used books out there for $1-$2 each.
The Radio Museum website charges something like a one time $25 membership fee and you get access to a lot of schematics that are normally not available online. That is unique access.
I haven't run out of "free" material to keep myself busy so I don't feel like I need a membership somewhere. If chess.com decides to restrict access and charge for more of it then I think the free market will give them an answer.

My gifted membership ran out today. If I had more chess talent, even to the average level, I might renew, but since I have barely improved since learning how the pieces move on here, I'm not wasting any more money on chess.

*Rises from his chair and with a Barney Stinson voice says* Challenge accepted! I, Kingseye, will improve your game to a 1500 "Online chess" at Chess.com level.
If you want to work with me anyway. :P
Maybe you'd gift me a Chess.com membership then? ;)
The text above the previous line is a serious offer by the way.

I probably would. I would think it was a bit steep but I enjoy the site quite a lot.
As for those saying it is too expensive already, it works out to $0.27 a day, or 16p in the uk. That doesn't seem extortionate to me when you consider the features available. You can't buy much of anything for 16p nowadays. At that price a pint in a pub would give you 15-20 days membership, a packet of smokes 46 days, can of coke 5 days, newspaper 2 days. Anyway, just my opinion I suppose but when I break it down like that it seems such an insignificant amount of money for the features I have come to enjoy since becoming a member.

If you could perform such a miracle, I'd gift you a gold.

@Genghiskhant, that's a very good point. I guess it just seems like a lot more to pay $100 dollars up front than a quarter a day because you have to pay that $100 soon after. Some people might not have that much money left over to spend on chess at one time.

YES! This is going to be legen- wait for it- DARY!
I'll send you a message shortly. :)
I think the other thing to think about is value for the money. When you spend $30-$100 for a chess membership here I imagine that there will be a short period of time when you will be very involved with the site. Then, as time passes, the emotional commitment starts to fade a bit. It may not fade away completely but it's less that before. When the time to renew comes up people may ask and say, "Well, it was fun for a year but do I really want to put down another $100? That's $200!"

Diamond? I don't even feel comfortable doing the Gold level right now. Maybe if membership here entitled me to some benefit local to my community I would consider Gold.
Why the curiousity? Is chess.com about to become a very restricted site?
