Would you play chess in your car? Would you play chess at a bar? Would you play chess in a house? Would you play chess with a louse?

It amazes me that so many folks are so cavalier about operating heavy machinery.  As an operator of heavy machinery, it is your duty to not endanger others.

Pay attention to the world!

Would you play chess with Green Eggs and Ham?

Would you play chess riding your John Deere?

WanderingPuppet

Would you could you Sam I Am?

Would you could you in a bus?

Would you could you with some guy named Gus?

I never could play chess in a car.

I never saw mate in 8 from afar.

Mr_Spocky

if i could

Mr_Spocky

I would play chess.

If i could play chess.

There is no matter.

if Chess is a platter

It's irrelevant.  Drivers need to pay attention to the road.

Ziryab

I have played blindfold chess while driving, and I have read a chess book by propping it on the steering wheel at 60 mph (Neil McDonald, Winning with the Kalashnikov [1995]). It was a new book then, and I was behaving recklessly both in my manner of reading and in the resulting chess play. Playing blindfold chess is not particulary risky if the roads are bare and dry and the traffic is light. It's certainly no more dangerous than discussing politics with my brother while driving.

OK, I don't bring personal stuff into forums at all. But I'm going to make an exception today.

My son was killed four years ago by a distracted driver. I don't know what she was doing--talking on the phone, tuning her radio, rifling through the glove compartment--but she was doing SOMETHING when she sailed across two lanes of traffic and ended his life.

Whether you think this thread was funny, ironic, or--God help us--serious, it is really nothing more than idiotic and offensive. Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road. Period.

"don't know what she was doing"

Probably not playing chess.

Oh, very witty and amusing reply! I laughed and laughed. I'll show your response to my wife when she gets home; I'm sure she'll find it funny too. I'm so happy to know that my son's death is bringing you the opportunity to be clever.

I'm stupefied.  Most of the folks who have posted in this thread should not be allowed to drive at all.

Even Ziryab?!  I'm stunned.

I'm at least old enough to drive, as are my children (with the exception of the puppies, of course). See David Bowman, Let the Dog Drive (1993). http://www.amazon.com/review/RTXO3NTRS14EY

Im really sorry for your loss, and for the ignorant comments of some members on here.

Humor, especially bad humor, is not an answer to everything. I like the legislation in the Netherlands. If you carry a handset in your hand while driving, you are an offender. Even when you are not calling. A blackberry in your car is very dangerous. I know a person that had an awful accident due to checking his mail. Accidents happen before you know it. We seem addicted.

Dont even speak on a mobile phone whilst drivingCryMany die on the roads.

After she gets home, tell me if she laughed too.

Why? Assuming this guy is telling the truth, what's the point of attempting to be funny here? It is absolutely astonishing how two-faced humanity can be. We can be so smart and compassionate and yet, we can be so despicable...

I can fully understand your having doubts. People on the internet make up stuff all the time to make themselves look good or for all kinds of other nefarious and petty reasons. But I've got a lot invested in this thread:
