Would you rather have a title or high rating?

High rating

I'd rather have the high chess rating and chess understanding/ability which comes along with that. A chess title sounds cool, but it doesn't really mean a ton in itself. It is the journey and not the title.

High rating; FM is a useless title

I mean, it does mean something. ANY official chess title is a massive accomplishment, but I know what you meant grin.png

look at the number of FM's...its just such an ordinary, generic, no name title

I would rather have a high rating, although titled players do have some benefits (for example, a lifetime free membership), I still think that a high rating is better, you could get a title in the future anyway.

Better untitled at 2600 than grandmaster at 2400.

given that a high online blitz rating at chess.com has no actual meaning I would rather have a classical title like CM.

then again, I would never ever get it, its not about talent, I'm simply too lazy to ever be able to improve in such fashion.

I'll correct you, you don't see the title valuable enough for the amount of effort it would take you. Lazyness doesn't exist, just conditions and what you value.

I would pick the rating and then try to become the highest rated untitled player in the world(OTB)

High rating

Doesn't a title stay with you for the rest of your life? If so, I would think everyone would prefer a title. I believe GM Maurice Ashley is still referred to as "GM," even though he doesn't play competitive chess these days.

Title duh. You need a specific rating for a title, so, theoretically all I have to do is say I choose the IM title, and I instantly start playing at IM level and have an IM rating of let’s say… 2437.

Avatar of ChessPro1016

If the rating comes with the skill, then I’ll take the rating and become an IM. If the skill AND the rating comes with the IM I’m taking the title.

Rating. With 3000, you beat almost all the players online. Who cares about title. They know you can get it if you want.

Avatar of HumbleCrumb

A title is just two letters after your name if you have 3000 elo

So you have chosen, BAN

Neither. I'm happy just the way I am.

"Doesn't a title stay with you for the rest of your life?" ++ Yes, a title is for life.

"everyone would prefer a title"
++ No. An untitled strong player is respected and feared. A low rated grandmaster or master is pathetic. He still gets invited to norm tournaments so upcoming players can score title norms by beating him.
