Again 50 move rule 390 move game!

Something has to be done about the 50 move rule bug.  In blitz it just does not work.  I had a 390 move (both sides) game where my poor opponent lost on time.  (I had 3.5 seconds left)

You mean you clicked on the draw after 50 moves were made (after the last capture or pawn move) and it didn't give you the draw?

Because, 50 move draw and triple repetition have to be claimed, they are not automatic.

MSC157

That's true what Martin said.

NewArdweaden

Probably it was a draw due to insufficient material. Did you have any pieces beside the king?

Here is the game: http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=1062003668

Oh, I misunderstood the problem.

I was a full minute ahead on time to start.  I thought the 50 move thing would kick in automatically.  When I saw how many moves were played I was shocked.  My opponent kept offering a draw and I kept moving.  So he was hitting the draw button....lots. (He got pretty upset.....blocked me immediately after the game.  I don't blame him.  it was a  theoretical draw.)   I don't think 50 move will work in blitz.  I think they never expected it to happen because of the little amount of time alloted in blitz.

Jion_Wansu

Do you know what the 50 move rule is?

He was probably hitting the draw before the conditions were met and stopped when you were not accepting it. Once the condition is met, the draw can be claimed and the game will immediately end. If it is done correctly, the draw should work fine.

MSC157

Well, this was a little bit unsportsmanlike not to accept a draw the first time, to be honest.

MSC157 -  I understand your point but blitz rules are not standard rules.  The clock is part of the game.  Purists don't like it, but they don't have to play if they don't like the rules.  We played evenly so he could have asked for a rematch and beaten me silly but he just picked up his ball and went home and blocked me.   There really should be a better way.

MSC157

No, I agree clock is a part of the game, but this should really matter just when there is something to play or the time is really really low. You must have had at least 2 minutes both on the clock in this case.

However, I guess arbiter would declare a draw in this situation, if someone lost on time before 50th king's move

kiloNewton

Black could have won by 161...Nxh5 gxh5 Kh6 Kc4 Kxh5 Kd5 g4 fxg4 Kxg4 Ke6 Kf4 Kxe6 Kxf4

MSC157

Wait wait, what?

Umm, sorry PlasmaOverload, I take my words back. I must have been watching another game before I replied to your thread, because I thought there are only blocked pawns and lone kings. Sorry.

EarthFlatNotaGlobe

MSC157......no problem..... Thank you for your integrity in apologizing.

kiloNewton......yes...putting my Bishop on h5 was a mistake...but I had sacked my pawn on h5 earlier because I thought the 50 move rule was going to kick in automatically because of no progress (no captures).  I've only been on this site for about a month.  Still learning.
