You can set your options* so that you receive an alert (audible sound, browser pulses on your task bar, email notification). That way, you will only get prompted to look at the board when it IS your move.
Of course, there's nothing stopping you from looking at the board in between times - to plan your future moves. You can even use a Conditional Move to set a response to an opponent's future move.
