Can't upload avatar image

I've tried several images (both .png and .gif, sized 300x300) and each time it says "upload successful" but just shows a white blank image on my profile.
The image files are definitely fine and open in every other application. 
How can I fix this?

I'm not seeing any issues changing avatar images. Do you maybe have a browser plug-in that could be interfering?

(i've tried on both firefox and chrome, just get the white square that is currently my avatar every time)

Ah I think I got it sorted, thx. Was on my end apparently - not sure why but saving it in a different photo editor fixed it.
