Charged for whole year

This “ Free trail “ that this site offers to members, is in my mind rather dubious, and a unfair system. If the person who uses it forgets to cancel it , they will be charged for a whole year. It should be up to chess.com to ensure an automatic cancellation at the end of the trail period

Almost all trials of services work the same way. You get the trial, provide payment details, and if you don't cancel before the trial is up, you pay the subscription cost.

It isn't unique to the site and the process is clear. The site does offer a 39-day money back guarantee as well, for first time purchases, and often renewal, so there is minimal risk for most people.

I haven't applied for yearly subscription. I have been using free membership trail for the past one month. But suddenly on 22/05/2020 my free membership subscription got renewed and charged me 100$ without my knowledge. I want to cancel my subscription and I need those money back. It just happened without my knowledge. I kindly request you to help me overcome this and get my money back as i have to pay school for my son. Thank you.

You need to open a ticket with support.

It still doesn’t sound good to me, another thing if the person who takes the “ Free trail “ if he does have the misfortune of forgetting too cancel it , he then has all the hassle of trying to get his money back . Automatic cancellation avoids all these problems.

Not getting the free trial avoids the problems as well. Every free trial in the world works like that (or pretty much all of them).

Every free trail in the world that works like this is wrong . It’s perfectly obvious to me why these “ free trails “ don’t work with an automatic cancellation, and further more I would like to know why this isn’t the case , as by having an automatic cancellation system, it avoids any problems to the recipient, and also those who are offering it

Every credit card in the world offers consumers the chance to take and use things without paying up front.

How sad when the bills just start showing up.

Chess.com's system is better and nicer to consumers.

All they have to do to avoid getting charged is to cancel in time.

If that slips their mind, they still can cancel within the first 30 days.

Nothing could be nicer.

/ All the people who post here feigning ignorance that charges would result are embarrassing themselves.

You still haven’t explained why an automatic cancellation system is not used 🤷‍♂️

Because the point is to sell premium memberships and 999/1000 understand the deal.

Hello. I got the free trial for the diamond membership and didn't cancel it, thinking it would only charge me $8 for a month. Instead it charged me $99 for a whole year which was way more and longer than I had wanted. I need this to either be switched to a monthly subscription with a refund of the difference, or a full refund and removal of my premium membership. Thank you. (I have already created a support ticket and forum post of my own.)

The site has a lot of tickets and seem to be running around 7-10 days on many of them.

This has happened to me as well. I was expecting a Monthly sub after the trial which I was fine with and was shocked when I got the email telling me I subscribed anually. This has never happened to me on any other trial ever and I guess this is something I have to look out for in the future

I have an open ticket for a week now with no response, I understand they say they are backed up but I trust anyone could understand even a little why I would get a little fidgety now. To top it off it overdrew my bank account and I got charged by my bank for the overdraw. So yeah I'm dissapointed and keeping calm the best I can.

They'll certainly get you refunded. Though the premium screen clearly shows it is billed yearly. If you wanted monthly you had to be on that option where the per month cost is higher.

i did select the $8.33 monthly option for a year. which was what i thought.. $8.33 monthly for a year. i just saw where it reads Pricing and it has Yearly and Monthly for the $8.33\monthly which will charge you $99.99 and another option $14.99\monthly which is monthly. what i didnt see was you have to select either yearly or a monthly option on top. maybe if you guys fix it where people can see that and know the difference? i will still return to monthly to continue supporting this site once i get refunded now that i know where to choose the payment. thanks

Every "free trial" on the internet works this way. If you dont want to subscribe to a yearly membership the answer is simple.....do not sign up for a free trial, do not give your credit card details, or do not forget to cancel.

yes but the way chess.com has it set up is confusing

I am having the same issue with the subscription. I am very worried right now because it charged my credit card, and I do not have the money to pay for the 100$. The free-trial page said it would be a monthly payment, but they charged me for a whole year. I was planning to cancel my subscription after 1 month only by the end of this month. I would like a refund and a subscription cancellation.

When you are on the page, there are two header options; one yearly that will show the equivalent monthly cost but that is charge in advance, and the monthly option with the higher per month cost.

You need to open a ticket to get a refund, and choose the billing option.

I did that already and I am hoping they would contact me back because I saw many people say that they take very long to get back to us. Its crazy how many people experienced this exact same issue.

Exactly the same issue. You can only tell it's annual via the tiniest of text that's smaller then everything else on the site. Why default to yearly? To catch people out, clearly (I've already created a support ticket. Lucky PayPal exists so I'll sort it out via them if no joy here)
