The site recently made changes to the default tab on the game page. Click on the "Chat" tab to reveal the chat window:

Agreed. I think an option in Settings, to change the default, would be nice.

It seems likely to lead to a reduction in chat(t); somewhat surprising given that this is both a chess and a social site.
