Chess.com is repeatedly disconnecting even when my internet connection is stable and fast.

So I lost a rapid chess game just now for no reason. It didn't give a reason as to why my opponent won without checkmate, but my browser said that I had "no connection" for the last 15 or so seconds (I was able to reconnect by reloading the webpage, but by then the website let my opponent win), despite my PC having about 70 Mbps stable Wi-Fi and downloading stuff from 3 other sites without disconnecting. Is there any way to prevent this?

According to fast.com, my latency is as follows: Unloaded Latency 20-25 ms (varies every time I redo the speed test), Loaded Latency 150-600 ms (varies every time I redo the speed test).

Okay, so I had another game just now and nope, I lost again thanks to my PC disconnecting from chess.com (it remained connected to my Wi-Fi for the entire time).

I did the following:

  1. Stopped downloads
  2. Had only one open tab (75% RAM usage)
  3. Ensured that there were no extensions running besides AdBlock (that shouldn't be able to interfere with the data unless it thinks chess.com is an advertisement server)
  4. Ensured that Microsoft Edge was updated
  5. Removed cookies specifically from chess.com

I couldn't use a wired network since my university blocks people from plugging in computers to the ethernet port. But FWIW, chess.com sometimes runs for an entire game properly even at 500kbps even at 90% RAM usage.

If you're using the university wifi, it's possible the problem is on that part of the path as well.

Is there any way to check whether my university Wi-Fi is actively blocking some port used by chess.com? I first need to know whether chess.com uses any port besides the normal HTTPS port.

UPDATE: Goddammit this is the third time in 24 hours I've lost because of my stupid Wi-Fi disconnecting. But this time it gave a different issue (chess.com said my connection was stable, and showed that the opponent didn't move till the timer ran out, and then said that my opponent had moved and won since I AbAnDoNeD the game).

It's probably not something being blocked since you wouldn't be able to play in that case. However, on any shared connection, there is always going to be a possibility of getting connection issues. I know when someone is streaming on my wifi, I'll have lag and disconnect issues.

Welp, I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that I tried a Wi-Fi system driver update from HP's official website thinking that would help resolve the issues and somehow that first crippled my Wi-Fi and then completely destroyed my Windows 10 installation (it's so bad that now it won't boot into Windows and it doesn't even recognise my internal SSD when I try to reinstall Windows from scratch).

The good news is that I managed to install Ubuntu (thankfully the SSD still works even though Windows doesn't recognise it, so all my data is safe) and so far it hasn't disconnected or even dropped below 3 bars on chess.com's connection strength thingy (next to my flag while playing). When I played online on Windows it used to always show the connection strength as 1 or 2 bars only. So that means that either Windows messed up somehow or HP can't even make acceptable software for their own hardware.

Well, I guess it is time to send my laptop to the service centre (and its 1 year warranty expired only 3 months ago 🥲)

Ads on chess.com are interrupting rapid chess games. I lost three games in succession due to adds interfering with my games. sucks.

Get an Adblocker. I suggest uBlock Origin or Adblock+ for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari.

How did the ads interfere? Misbehaving ads can be reported.

All desktop and mobile browsers have adblocker extensions available to download. But I don't understand how an ad can interfere with a game, unless the ads covered part of the board as well.

Try using a different browser. try usign edge and see if this still presists

I had this problem for several months. It reached the point where I would get disconnected after making 1 move. I tried the various recommendations but the problem persisted. I lost from 200-250 rating points three times.

Eventually the problem was solved when I upgraded my server and switched from Safari to Google Chrome.

Dio NOT continue changing, updating or blaming anyone else but this site for those disconnects. It is rampant and happens constantly. The site cannot award wins categorically to individuals based on disconnects. This is not chess. In the real world one can not 'disconnect' from a losing position and win.

I have had the exact same experience in the last week as the poster above. When I click on "New Game" nothing happens for 15 to 30 seconds. If I try to start another game, it says "you are currently playing" but I can't access the game. A couple times I have cleared my browser cache and then reloaded the page, and then I find that I am in the middle of a new game where 40 seconds have already elapsed. This happened so many times where I have tried to start a game and I forfeit it because I can't see the gameboard. Chess.com has now banned me in the same way as the above poster. I immediately cancelled my membership, because this issue is with Chess.com's servers. Doing some research on this seems that there are many people having this same issue and Chess.com is not really doing anything about it.

I've cleared my browser cache multiple times. I should not have to do it after every game--pretty interesting that this is happening to so many users. Eventually, after chess.com starts losing enough memberships and paying customers, maybe they will look into this ... maybe they won't. I've just started using lichess.org and so far, I'm enjoying it without having to clear my browser's cache. That was something we had to do in the 2000s when the internet was still young.
