I don't see an easy solution to your problem. Chessbase used to offer free Chessbase native versions for some Winboard engines on their download page, including Crafty (although they might not have gotten to version 23.4 yet). However, I can no longer find these engines on their newly designed web site, so I can only assume that Chessbase is no longer interested in supporting Chessbase native versions of Winboard engines.

Another possible solution would be to use Odd Malin's Winboard to UCI adaptor to convert Crafty to UCI and then use it in UCI mode. I tried this once and wasn't able to do it; Maybe you'd have better luck?

A third solution would be to use another GUI that actually allows you to install Winboard engines (Arena, Winboard, etc.)

I also have F12 with Houdini, Stockfish, Firebird and Komodo loaded: they're all free and they're all world-class engines. Is Crafty a must have engine?

My advice: forget about it unless you want to learn how to use search engines and you also want to raise your "PC" and "Windows" ratings by several hundred pts; which will involve a fair amt of time spent on this project and not on playing chess. It's your call.

Yep, as long as you stick with UCI engines, you should have no problems getting them to work in Fritz. It's just that Chessbase doesn't want to bother with Winboard engines.
