Does Running Two Different Engines Mess with Each Other?

i'm running Chess King (8 MB) and Fritz (1.3 GB)

Often both won't play the move right away; i have to click it several times or drag several times...something's not right.  Can it be because of running both at the same time?  or is it something else, some new virus or malware?

Now it's not letting me make moves on either engine.  That means a virus or malware??  Am running Avast paid subscription on computer.

If running the two engines simultaneously is using all of your cpu resources, then your PC could be bogging down. Start watching your cpu usage. If you think it's a problem, start reducing the number of threads that the engines use and see if that helps.

First, reboot and see if the problem is repeatable. If so, you have some detective work to do.

What EscherehcsE (nice username!) says. Probably you are using 100% cpu on all cores leaving little resources for the computer to do anything else such as operate your interface normally.

Other then that there is some memory bandwidth issues with running engines simultaniously on multicore machines so you might find them running upto 5-10% slower than they would when run individually. But that's not so bad.

Says my CPU usage is around 3% and memory is about 54% when running one of them.

I ran both, and it says CPU is 42%.  THEN, funny thing, they both started working fine!  Thanks for the help.  Still don't know but deleting many photos may have helped. 54% memory isn't bad, right?

I try some of these so called FREE malware downloads, and sometimes I'm suspicious of them...maybe THEY put in actual malware and trojans to mess people up?   I've done that Malwarebytes one and SpyBot and one other that have forgot the name of.

3% cpu usage for an engine seems really low, unless it's using only 1 thread and you have a BUNCH of cores. 50% RAM usage is OK; You just don't want it to get close to 100%. You might want to look at the actual engines' processes with the Windows task manager while the engines are running.

In general, I'm not a big fan of antivirus (AV) programs. There have been some recent vulnerabilities with some AV programs. Plus, zero-day exploits are becoming more common, and AV programs seldom detect them. I just run the free AV program that comes with Windows, and I periodically run the free Malwarebytes. BUT, I'm borderline paranoid about watching what I do on the computer (practicing safe computing and surfing).

Something still wrong.  No engines, playing a game on chess dot com and the moves don't happen;  have to click 20 times for a move to take.  I've already restored several times.  Any other ideas?   Sure seems some malware is doing this?

Well, it could be the Chess.com server - or it could be malware - or even something else.

First step, I'd run a full Avast scan, then a full Malwarebytes scan. Then go from there.

Master_Po

Trying everything I know... thanks for the ideas.  Deleted the Opera browser and trying Firefox now.  (already ran full Avast scan, several of them, then the Malwarebytes scan, several, then deleted that.  Just hard to trust free stuff...i once ran some free thing, and it said I had extremely malicious stuff and to call their toll free number.  Once I did, they said, "yep, you got some BAAAADDD stuff...just pay us $120 and we'll get rid of it.)

  See how this Firefox works.

EscherehcsE

You can generally trust Malwarebytes, IF you get it from their website:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Don't get it from anywhere else, otherwise it might come with an installer wrapper with God knows what kind of adware, PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), etc.

You have to watch out for those scams. I've gotten the "Windows Support" call from India about at least a dozen times, telling me I have viruses. If you actually get as far as giving them control of your PC, you might as well just wipe your hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows.

Master_Po

OMG, i DID give them complete control once...had to buy a new computer. lol

Idiot.  Had lost my Windows install disc.   Thanks for the official Malwarebytes page.

No, but whatever you do, don't cross the streamstongue.png

Master_Po

Don't know what 'cross the streams' means?

You from Scotland?

Cheers.

TheGambitKid

i had same problem.  It was the mouse.  New $8 mouse everything solved.

Do you have the same problem when clicking icons in your computer? Like icons to launch programs or documents? If so, then I'm 100% sure it is a hardware problem: the mouse.

If it happens only on chess.com you have some malware installed that is capturing your mouse clicks.

Try different browsers, but even then, if it is something that got installed at OS level, you still might getting the same behavior.
