I had thought when you ran out of time it was an automatic loss

but now i can see that there was no way i could have won 

 so its a draw.

I guess i have always had at least a pawn in time won or lost games.

if mate is possible(doesn't matter if it's improbable), it's a win. If not, it's a draw.

I think the official wording is that when a person, say John Doe, times out, the result of the game is what the result would have been had John Doe played the absolute worst moves for the rest of the game.

dmeng, the official wording is far from what you have said. But the meaning is pretty much the same.

This site is INCONSISTENT in calling a draw when one player runs out of time but the other has insufficient material to mate.  INCONSISTENT.  There is no excuse for this.  Chess.com should fix this.  There is nothing worse than losing a game to an opponent who has only a King and Knight.

Your material also counts. If you can helpmate it is not a draw.

Thank you for the reply.  Having played for years, including live tournament play, I am embarrassed that I did not know this.
