Using Vacation to Stall

I have a game going right now where my opponent has gone on vacation three times during the game. I play one day games, not 2-4 day games. Vacation is being used as a way to extend and stall games. This is NOT the intended use for vacation. Vacation should only be allowed one time per game, and then it should be stalling. Just my opinion.

Premium members automatically get placed on vacation when low on time in one or more of their daily games, with the exception of games in no-vacation tournaments. So, other than just making moves before getting too low on time, premium members can't turn that off.

It's part of how the system works, and unless they are only doing it to prolong a hopelessly lost game, there's nothing to do but wait for a move to be made.

I thought it should automatically claim the win, maybe it is not working or is turned off. The option is under Home >> Settings (on the main site menu), then go to "Daily Chess". There is an option "Automatically claim victory when time runs out!" which may be turned off.

Those instructions are using the web site. I don't know if they can be changed using the mobile app as I only use the web site myself.

I had to claim a draw recently, as in OTB the draw is not automatic with the 50 move rule.

Vacation time should be reduced to one month per year

On the website there is a setting to automatically claim on timeout. If that's not set, you have to claim manually. If that is set and you're playing someone on your friend list, I believe you have to claim those manually as well.

Does a person using vacation to repeatedly extend their time in a game gain an unfair advantage over their opponent due to having more time per move?

I imagine the majority of people getting placed on auto-vacation is due to having too many games or just being too busy. So they're probably not even looking at those games or using the time to find better moves.

Thank you, Martin. I checked and the setting to automatically claim victory when time runs out is checked. Is this a bug?

Depends. Was that player on your friend list? If so, then it isn't a bug, but by design.

How do we make sure we automatically get the win against friends too?

I think you always have to claim on those.

Vacation and timeout protection doesn't suddenly make you a better player

You still have to play and win that way.

That's annoying. I often play friends in tournament settings and will want the win as soon as it's possible. Why break a feature that was working fine? Surely if the "issue" of claiming wins against your friends would be best solved as a second choice. Not being able to autoclaim wins against friends just adds annoyance and extra work for the players.

As far as I'm aware, it's always been that way. Or at least for a long time anyway. I could be wrong, since I haven't played Daily in a while.

Exactly what I was pointing , they have to change it .

Does anyone see this as fair play?

Yes I think it is fair play.

Vacation time is for when you haven't got time to play and so need to pause your games.

If you don't want people to use vacation time play games without vacation time. They exist.

You have the option to play games without vacation time. Not being able to play daily doesn't mean not being able to log in to chess.com.

It's a non issue that you can solve by selecting games where it can't happen.

Daily games cannot be played without vacation. Vacation is being utilized by people to stall losing games. Is this the intention of vacation?  If a player is on vacation and can’t make moves, how can they log in?  Using vacation to stall losing games is wrong.

I am actively playing daily games without vacation.

That rule has existed since I've been here and is the primary reason I upgraded to Diamond. Vacation can be used by anyone, it's only the timeout protection that is available to premium. It does not give a game advantage, just a way to automate being placed on vacation.

Pretty sure the site will never get rid of it.

Vacation doesn't mean they can't log in, play some live, do some puzzles, just that they can't play Daily games without turning off vacation, with the exception of no-vacation events.

Daily games can take months and event's can take a year or more and vacation will be needed at times.
