Wow. Don't know what to tell you. Just went to the 2 puzzles and they worked fine for me. The first is kingside and the second queenside. Kg1 and Kc1 right?
How to Castle?
See the castling section on the rules of chess:
http://www.chess.com/learn-how-to-play-chess.html#special
I'm familiar with the rules. That's not the issue here, what I want to discover is why I am being given an 'invalid move' when according to many others the move SHOULD cause a Castle.
I should also mention that it's not only the puzzle that doesn't work. I can't Castle in an actual game either. . .
It's because you're not familiar with the rules.
I'll guess that you don't know that the king lands on "c1" on a queenside castle, not b1.
Please try reading. I am familiar with the rules, the issue was nothing to do with me moving the King to the 'wrong' square. As I mentioned, this wasn't an issue with the puzzles, I simply used them to explain my difficulty in a clearer way without resorting to screenshots or anything.
I've solved this problem now anyway, no need for further discussion. If you'd be interested to know how I fixed it, I have no idea. I did change browser though . .
The clues you give us:
1. have only managed to get this to work once.
2. When I let go of the King it simply flies back to it's starting place as though I've performed an illegal move. (You do not mention a message popup).
When first solving a puzzle, an incorrect move results in a "incorrect move -- try again" notice that pops up for a couple seconds.
BUT if you solve it "once" then press the rewind button the only action available is to step through the puzzle using the arrows. if you try to castle properly or perform an incorrect move the K "flies back to it's starting place" without a popup incorrect move notice.
By back paging then forward paging the browser (or any other way you want to close and restart the page ie logoff) the puzzles restart from the beginning and the incorrect move notices again appear. Perhaps the RESTART button i see on some puzzles would work.
hope it helps
:P
I believe you've figured it out Portnoy1212- The puzzles aren't designed for a technophobe.
I'd only tried it once in game and after it failed there I decided to consult the puzzles. When I managed to complete the puzzle on my first go only to have it 'fail' the next time, I figured it was something on my end. Thanks for clearing this all up & helping to establish that I wasn't being dumb :{
Hi (=
I have looked at several threads such as http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/how-do-you-castle-on-this-site yet I am still unable to get this move to work as it should.
On that thread you'll notice a puzzle that allows you to practice Castle. I have only managed to get this to work once. I'm doing everything by the book and the pieces simply won't swap. When I let go of the King it simply flies back to it's starting place as though I've performed an illegal move, when I know I haven't. Please help, I really need to know how to Castle.
