Windows Vista: Control Panel => System and Maintenance => Administrative Tools => Event Viewer
Look under application and system for error messages related to java. Ignore everything else you see there for now or else you might have a nervous breakdown. Most PC users are advised not to look here unless absolutely necessary because Windows generates a bizillion event messages every second and most of them are meaningless unless you start looking them up, one by one by one by....well you get the point
is java required to play chess? i have uninstalled java for security problem, but can still play chess.
if you have problem with chess-board of online chess Ctrl+F5 (hard refresh) may help. or you can install Microsoft DirectX 9 or 10 for live chess.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with trying to access the computer :(
Could you make sure you have the latest java update installed? A while back I tried playing the computer, didn't have the latest update and had the same issue as you. Also, can you make sure that when accessing the play computer screen that it is your only tab open and see if that helps out?
