I don't like getting death threats

Jamie, you should be able to sleep a little better now that we know more about the threat. I had 4 cigarettes yesterday, 3 today, and hopefully 2 tommorrow. If I can completely quit for an extended time, I may not be in the forums as much. It will be back to the drums

I feel the same way- nothing will happen unless it starts having a detrimental effect on the site in which case it would be a good business decision. Of course each of the persons to whom a death threat was sent has the option and right to file their own police report.
I don't think a person deserves to go to jail for this, bad as it is. Almost all bullies genuinely want to kill no one.

Federal law 18 U.S.C. § 875(c) states: "Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

I don't doubt that, but I would not wish this person in jail only based on those messages. That seems extreme.

Realistically, community service without a fine if the offender has a history of trouble making, but no ties to illicit groups. A stern talking to by authorities, if that, is all that would probably take place though.
My honest guess is the offender is just bored and trying to incite unrest. I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually decent, and a nice person in real life.

Hi prudentia, I'm really sorry that my game challenge was deemed rude. I'm just interested in playing unrated games with better players for improvement, There was no way to ask kindly, as you don't accept friends or messages. I guess I should have taken the hint from those things alone. Take care.

Al, without going into too much detail, on the site I mderated until recently, we were serious about security, because of the nature of our clientele. We could and did trace IP addresses, ban all proxies, block problem users and service providers, and report threats to the local police departments - world wide. Two of our moderators won a commendation for preventing a threatened serious criminal incident.
If the will exists to stop these people, the technology is there.
The technology is there. But, we aren't dealing with battered women here. We are dealing with chess players. There is no tangible threat to these people, as it's doubtful that any of them have actually been in the physical presence of the offender.
Also, you're goading the offender, and responding to his/her 'threats' willingly, in order to provoke a reaction. At what point are you just as much a part of the problem? This goes for everybody who is feeding that troll.

I disagree here a bit. It's tempting to reply to one, even if it's not the most practical idea, and sometimes people want to make a point. Considering the troll puts them in a situation they shouldn't have to be in anyway, I wouldn't be too critical of the "troll victim."
No no no!!!! People have every right to be concerned, many cases of internet squabbles have lead to death in real life.. people tracked down! The vast majority is just stupid stuff yes and hardly worth a mention but the threat is there and very real!

True. One technique to deal with trolls is to ridicule them... Laugh at them... Mock them. It goes straight to their bruised ego.
And there is safety in numbers. Trolls are cowards.
My first reaction was to withdraw. But I am not going to let the troll manipulate me.
