Here's one!

Kohai was and is a beautiful person. She was the Judge Judy of chess.com. She was a no nonsense moderator who was in charge of all the mods. She was fair but firm, a well loved person here. I feel your pain Don. She took, and put up with a lot of abuse. I don't know all the inter-office politics of what went on, and with no dis-respect towards Shaun, a lot of us miss her. I don't know if it was all completely Eric's fault. If you stay in any profession long enough, you just get burnt out. Yes, her exit could have, SHOULD HAVE, been handled a little more professionaly, like Ann Curry at NBC. In my opinion, the forums have gone downhill since she left, but I don't think you can't put all the blame on the doorsteps of Kohai, Eric, or Shaun. If anyone has anything gueinuenly nice to say about her or to her, I can pass it along. I would prefer to see her enjoying life with her "hubby" in NO pain, then to have her here, stressed out, demoralized, and overworked.

I know her personally - and she was fired! It was because she had some medical problems and the OWNER would not allow her to take time off to recover.

That's total bullshit.

No, its not,  Drspudnik, it is totally correct. She was laid off < fired, what ever you want to call it> by erik, She explained her side to me in full detail when it happened. We are good friends, but in Eriks defense, he was very generous and paid her for a few months after she stopped working. He didnt have to do that.

I wish her well, Ron. She always came across as a very nice person. :)

As far as im concerned, Erik lost a dedicated employee in jules< Kohai> He knows that. I have said it to him. This site was a well oiled machine with her in place. It hasnt been the same since. The problem with having virtual employees is you cant always see what is being done so im not sure the administration had any clue as to how dedicated she really was. she worked hard in here and was always accessible.

When you run a business you sometimes have to make difficult decisions. It's the way of the world. Such is life.

And the truth is healthwise she is not at all better so im not certain she would be able to work she is still in so much pain. She has had such a hard time and is such a wonderful person.

erik

If that were the truth about what happened, I could understand you being upset. But I assure you that was definitely NOT the case. I have remained in contact with Kohai to this day, and we are friendly. I will not publicly discuss the reasons why someone is no longer with us, but I can assure you that a medical condition is NOT the reason. We have many people on staff who have medical issues, and frankly, that is one of the reasons they work with us - that we are tolerant of their special needs and conditions. I did the best I could in this situation, and did, in fact, pay her for several months after. Running a business is hard. It's more sadness than joy, most of the time, as you are choosing often between two difficult and bad decisions. Anyway, I  can understand why someone would be upset if they thought we fired someone for being sick - but that is definitely, definitely not true. We worked around Kohai's medical issues for a long, long time and were happy to do so, just like we do with many other staff members who have or are dealing with special circumstances.

RonaldJosephCote

Thanks for clearing that up Chief

sleepingbeauty

Your right Erik. Many of us are well aware of your patience with regard to her health issues. It's your business and no one has the right to tell you how to run it.

However, to this day i can attest to the fact that she feels that you were not fully informed about certain things and let her go without knowing all the facts.  Because in the end, she doe's feel like you let her go in haste and felt those facts were purposely distorted. You might want to discuss that with her if you are on as friendly the terms you say you are.

I couldn't say that months ago because you were in fact helping her out in a tremendous way < You are a good soul Erik, of that there is no question. running a business is not easy. i did it for 20 years.> and i didnt want to make waves for her but im saying it now. Im not saying it for you to discuss further in here. not our business. Just food for thought for you. Between you and her. I know fully in detail her side of it and can say that you dont entirely know how she feels about it. Mayb you just dont care but if you didnt, you wouldnt be checking on her. just saying. No need to respond. i didnt write this for a response. not my business. Discuss it with her if you want to know more.

For anyone else not familiar with some of the logistics, I think I can mention something that won't piss off anybody. Eric is located in Calif. Kohai is located in England. The British medical system is a little different than here in the States. Yes, you may not have to pay for major surgery, but the down side is you have to wait...and wait....and wait.... All hospitals anywhere in the world are allways VERY busy. Like the V.A.Embarassed

There is private healthcare available in the UK also.

yes there is, many companies offer their employees that supplementation.

ALright,  I don't want to de-rail the thread about the pro and cons of medical assistance. I just wanted to point out that for a long time, Kohai was in a lot of pain with her shoulder. When she finally got in to see the surgeon, there was a waiting period.

RonaldJosephCote

You can throw me under the bus. I'll askCry   Eric, Would you ever consider taking her back part time, in a limited capacity, for starters??Undecided  Or is goodbye forever a done deal?

RonaldJosephCote

Let me ask another question, this time to the OP. Don, I'm under the impression, (although I could be wrong), that you act as mentor and coach to a number of children that you have purchased accounts for. (Very admirable BTW)  With your computer knowledge, you've also helped a lot of members in the "Bugs On Chess.com" thread.  I don't think Kohai would like to be associated with a negative decision on her behalf because of a disagreement with the owner. If you want to pull out the finances, that's your decision. Am I missing something here?Undecided  We should honor Kohai by helping everybody in this site IMO

sleepingbeauty

Not here ron.... that's between him and her.

VierKazen89

This must be a fun thread...

RonaldJosephCote

Alright, then let me ask this; Eric,  can you re-open Jamie Delarosa's account??Undecided   Another well loved and respected member of this siteSmile  I'll let you play my drumsSurprised
