I have exactly same problem. Thought it best to cancel and then rejoin. Wouldn't allow me to that as already had my email address. Completely confused!

jjrehp - Unfrotunately the only real option you have is to get a new iPad. The iPad 1 (while still very useable, I know, I have one also) is now 5 years old. I am finding more and more apps that are stuck with older versions as they start programming to the newer iOS updates. This allows them to to take advantage of better features in the OS.
Currently the Chess.com app needs iOS 7 and the iPad 1 is stuck at iOS 5.1.1.
I am having the same issue on my iPad 1. I speculate Chess.com has upgraded the software engine for playing live chess and the last version on iOS 5.1.1 is no longer able to keep up. Sad, it was my favorite use of the old iPad. I have an iPhone 5s and iPad mini but enjoyed feeling nostalgic. Long live the iPad 1
Just cranked up my ipad 1 chess.com app and was advised that to play live chess I need an update.
Sure, so attempted update. The latest update is not compatable with my ipad, so please download last compatable. Did this, then advised needed update to play live chess.
