Knight missing on gameboard (no captures have been made)?

Hello, all.

Recently, I was challenged to a daily game by a friend, and I noticed my king's knight is missing from the board. No captures have been made, and I didn't notice this until the second move. The right-side of the board says "custom position," so is this something my opponent included in the challenge (without me noticing when I accepted)? What's the deal here?

It is possible to challenge people using custom positions.  What is more likely in this case is that he went to challenge you after your previous Daily game against him.  Because he is rated about 300 points less than you, Chess.com recommended sending an Odds match against you, he either wanted the Odds match or didn't notice, sent you the challenge, and then you accepted.  So he was given knight odds against you in the current game (hence the custom position).
