Message from a nonfriend

Hello all,

I did my settings so that only my friends can send messages to me; however, yesterday a guy, who is not a friend or anything, whom I played (and beat) was able to send me a message (and a very rude and disturbing one at that). 

How can this happen ? Any ideas ? Thanks.

I have never heard that you can shut off messages from all 10,000,000 members.

There is the blocking function, where you can create a list of those who you don't want to message you or respond to your threads, but that is limited to 200 names.

Looking now in privacy settings, it does look like there is a setting you can choose that is supposed to restrict non-friends from messaging you. I guess it doesn't work.

If the message you received was truly disturbing, you should report it to the staff. (Use the contact form.)

I have used the following: 

lasker_noether --> privacy settings and set

"only my friends" can share messages with me, and

"only my friends" can view my notes or drop me a note.

The point is: I donot want to get stupid messages / notes just after I won a game :D

Well, it did seem to work for a while, because I did not get messages from non-friends except for friend requests, but suddenly I got a stupid message from somebody against whom I won a game yesterday. This got me curious. 

I once again got a stupid message from the same non - friend, after I won another game against him. I do not want to block him, I am just curious how he can send me a message, once again, my settings are so that non - friends cannot send me messages. Did he hack chess.com or something ?

It's a bug from live chess. People can send a message or a friend request from live chess and it ignores that you have it disabled.

Well, I cannot reply to him because he has disabled messages from non - friends. I understand the other, thank you for the explanation. Yet, I do not see any friend requests from him, so he should be using some other way.

Any more explanations ?

Are you using the old or new Chess.com? There was a glitch at one poiunt where people blocked could still post using V3 to a forum thread, or the app, or something like that: this sounds very similar. As notmtwain says, you should report it to the Support team via https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/emails/new

I am using chess.com via an internet browser (Mozilla Firefox, if that helps). I think I am using old chess.com, in that case. I will send a message to the Support team, and will post their answer here. Thanks !

this has happened to me once too. I beat this noob in live chess and we were kind of joking around in the chat. when he was about to lose, he started saying mean things in the chat and he stalled in the game. after the game, he sent me disturbing messages

This player has hacked chess.com. Period.

You actually can hide your notes from being viewed by non-friends and I've seen many people with this future who don't allow notes being posted by non-friends.
